The greatest detriment to a viable and profitable herd? Attachment!

x2. I aint saying its easy, but strict culling criteria is necessary for improvement of your herd and financial viability of your business. Now if a fella has money to burn, maybe its not such a factor . I think everyone has a cow or two, over the years, you develop a sentimental attachment to, but what i try to do is attach myself to the cows for the reasons I value as important: good disposition, keeps herd calm, raises a dandy calf each year, breeds back on time, holds her condition, etc.. These are the cows i attach my affections to. :2cents:

While reading some other threads, it appears that cows being on fescue can also cause them to be open. :???: Does that have anything to do with it?

It can ... depends on when you have your breeding season, the fescue toxicity, etc. If that's the reason she's open, you should think about punting on this one and find some fescue-adapted genetics.
