Bump. Whats everyone up to these days in the line breeding department? I spent a lot of today planning for 2020 calves, and who's going to be bred to whom this coming season. And what are you using for a program for calculating pairings?

Yeah deer and cattle are never together here. Which is good in my books. They may pass thru, but are never seen with the cattle. They'll be on the other side of the farm by themselves if seen at all.

Would be interesting to know if they were bought as higher dollar heifers a couple yrs ago and brought in to that area.

If you want to see what happens, just do it. Its just a calf, if you like the results - good. If you dont like it, its meets its fate as a beef calf.. like any other.

How can it be fescue if you're feeding that to the horses? Sounds like your hay is no good/not enough of it

Yes, every calf is weighed and subtracted from weaning weight. At the very least you should use an avg BW, But I prefer knowing the whole story. Atleast for now, Gathering BW's isn't the most fun. But I enjoy the data in the end.

I like to see 2.5+ from a cow, some heifers that get drug down may be around ~2.3's, but they better pick it up year 2. Anything in low 2s or below are junk calves here as I typically have good grass for them so no excuse. My highest was 4.42 <not sure why, typically around 3.3/3.4, lowest...

So I posted this picture the other month - I paid a bit of money for this embryo cow as a heifer, she's a 2014 model, and Im just getting some data back on her first heifer she had in 2016. This cow herself is always a fat pig, with a nice big udder - but always has a bad edema from her back...

Once heifers are of desired age/size put them with the bull. Thats it, thats all. I have had 4-5 month old calves get bred by herd bulls. If you're 250 would you have a problem laying it to a 125lb woman?

Do you have cow weights also?

Sounds like a local problem. There's some nice ones around here. Canadian show scene is a small segment though, they don't have a lot of clout with what the farmers are breeding.

Put a nose ring in him period, I would think should fix it. Have never had a bull do it (that I've caught anyways) But it p!sses me off fierce to see a cow suck another cow.

And what was the damage? If the chains are on proper, I state again, YOU aren't going to over pull a calf.

You can't overpull by hand. Fat cows are lazy pushers.
