Somebody had better grab this one

Many of us come here to learn, others apparently to be the class clown or bully. If we happen to have a different perspective or an alternate way of accomplishing something it appears to be that a large number of the members are quick to put down others. It is not the ideas or the suggestions...

herofan came here seeking information. What resulted was the thread got hijacked by willful ignorance! Reminds me of a school kid that cannot learn so he has to become the class clown to be recognized.

    Drought advice

jdman1952 Can you locate a corn grower that is having drought problems also? If you can find one that tentatively is going to have a crop failure can you buy the drought stricken corn crop and salvage the stalks?

    Rotational grazing in drought

You have received some great info above. Cease to permit the cattle to have access to all paddocks that are dormant or have been grazed short. A sacrificial lot with hay or crop residue/byproduct is a necessity IMO. Even when the rains come, be slow to put the herd back on the recovering forage.

dieselbeef Are you aware that you do come across with a high level of cynicism that probably discounts what you have to say? Your attitude of unsubstantiated negativity reflecting general distrust of the integrity or acknowledged motives of others is offensive? Even if this is the internet...

    Pigtail posts

The worst pigtail posts are from Kencove. You would think something that simple could not be fouled up but it can. If you are right handed it is very awkward to pick up the polywire in the pigtail and when installing the posts it is necessary to stop and put your foot behind the rod posts...

    Weight gain for calves

Here is a copy of the sale for feeder steers. I am just suggesting to be cautious. Cattle Receipts: 1184 Last Week: 909 Last Year: 1033 Slaughter cattle trended mostly 5.00 lower. Feeder cattle trended mostly 12.00 lower week before, the forth grain future falling has...

    Weight gain for calves

tnwalkingred I marketed steers this month and there certainly was very little money between the 3 wts and the 5 wts. I know that the markets are fluctuating a lot but with the feed costs your profit margin will be minimal at best. I sold some 6 weights that brought no more the the 5 weights...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

Hondac IMO you came close to covering all of the expenses and there still remains funds that more than covers any expenses omitted. I consider the land to stand for itself. It has appreciated over the years and if sold the gain would be a great percent of return on the original purchase...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

TexasBred A D=5 dozer sitting still is a dead expense too and when running sucks a world of diesel as does the other piece of equip. Then there is depreciation on each. I understand an operation like Agman's has a very good chance of success in his part of the world but would be out of the...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

Hondac Would you like to make some predictions for me on the stock market? You are good! The chicken litter is from a layer house and comes with calcium in the litter so I have not had to add lime in more than ~5 years. Parmak fence chargers use very little electricity. Miscellaneous...

bigbluegrass The nettle is just suppressed. It will reappear as Dun stated. Most of the nettle at my place is under the hot partition fence with the single stand of HT wire. As the cattle are rotated the forage under the fence gets accessed twice as they can graze the area from either side...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

704 miles on the truck last year just dragging the trailer to the sale barn and back. That's at least 50 gallons of fuel in itself. I suppose some of ya'll must be having good old fashion cattle drives since you have no expenses for this. Lets compare For my operation......4 haul trips to the...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

As the owner/operator there is no hired labor except mine. All profit goes to the owner/operator and that is me! I market calves year round to smooth out the cash flow and to attempt avoiding selling into a possible down market with the entire crop.

Banjo I agree with you. Applying a herbicide is about as far away from anything that I would do at this juncture. I am going to feed what is there. With the dry weather we are experiencing even a weed will look good soon. As stated I am not prone to apply herbicides. IMO even if the...

herofan You need to acquaint yourself with a good farm tax man. Already I would think you have qualified your land for farm tax use. States that I am familiar with set the rate based on the lands ability to produce. Pasture land is one of the lowest rates. Most states forgive the sales...

shaz Unfortunate there is no quick fix for reestablishing topsoil. Ceasing to break ground and adding something like chicken litter will add primary and secondary nutrients along with micro nutrients. My topsoil is thin from years of abuse by attempting to grow crops by others without adding...
