Woke up to thunder and lightening around 4:30 this morning ; it's been raining off and on since then. What a blessing!
We got fertilizer out on the hay meadow yesterday morning.....feel like we won the lottery.
The current Herf bull is taking a one way trip to town next weekend. I'm going to miss him; he's been a good one. Time to start looking for his replacement....if I can make up my mind what to go with on the baldy/super baldy gals.
We're in the process of clearing 25-30 acres of oaks, cedars and green briars. We'll probably be done with clearing in 3 weeks or so. In late March/ early April, we'll plant native grass. For erosion control until spring, we've used ryegrass in the past...with really great results.Any other...
that three different contractors since Memorial Day would tear up our gates/fences?
The day after Memorial Day, the guys from the water well company hit a gate post when the master cylinder went out on their work truck. In August, a communication contractor broke a couple of wires on our front...
We got 6/10 of an inch of rain yesterday! It's been raining off and on this morning, just light rain.
While not a drought buster but it sure helps my attitude.
Thank you, Lord, for the rain.
When I contacted the processor to schedule a visit to freezer camp for a couple of calves yesterday, I was able to get an appointment the end of June. I was thinking it would be more like a year out.
I need some info from fellow Texans, preferably north central Texans. A friend has approached us about leasing us his hay field. I've never done that before. He's interested in a cash lease for a couple of years. It's close so that's not an issue. It was sprigged in some sort of coastal about 5...
After a surprise storm blew through this morning and dumped more rain, our first cutting of the year will be postponed......again. I'm feeling lucky and thankful it wasn't already laid down. We've gone from worrying about a bad hay year due to drought to worrying about a bad hay year due to too...
Yesterday morning we realized we were missing a bull. There are only 2 very small pastures (one is 3 acres, the other is 10) that border us with any cattle on them. We checked those fence lines first. Everything was good and our bull was no where in sight. Checked the back fence; all was good...
Well, we had a late freeze overnight. I'm sure the warm season grass is going to appreciate that.......not. Our wsg has been slow to green up due to lack of meaningful rainfall. This sure won't help things. On the bright side, we met a buyer through a friend from church for the yearling heifers...
We ran into some new folks in the "neighborhood" yesterday. After chatting a bit, the lady asked how many acres we had. I'm always surprised by those kind of questions.... Kinda like asking how much money you have in the bank.
So glad I put hay out yesterday instead of waiting until after church today like normal. It's 37 and raining. While I know that's not "winter" to folks from the north, it's still plenty miserable!
I had hoped to hold off but will have to put out some hay in a week or so. We're holding cows off of several pastures with Johnson grass in them. Even with last weeks "winter" weather we haven't had a killing frost yet.
Anyone else in North Central Texas feeding hay yet???
Man, I feel like we've hit the jackpot so far this early fall with good rains and good temperatures both. Warm season grass is growing AND my volunteer ryegrass is too. I'm checking for army worms daily but no sign of them, thank the Lord. On top of that, weaning has gone very smoothly. The...
We penned some calves and gave them their 2nd round of shots in preparation of weaning in a few weeks. It was one of those days..... took forever to get the stragglers up, took twice as long as it should to split the calves off, calves didn't care to move down the alley, etc. No one was acting...
Does anyone have a recipe for pepper jelly that they really like ? I can't find mine and have a bunch of jalapenos that I need to do something with sooner rather than later.
Thanks.
Woke up to an inch of rain in the gauge yesterday morning after no substantial rain fall in 5+ weeks and it's 63 this morning! What a way to end July and start August here in Texas!! Sign me up for this every year. The grass is deep, the tanks are full and the cows are fat. Thank the good Lord!
Yesterday morning while we were moving hay off the hay meadow, our pairs in the pasture on the far side of the meadow came running up to the fence. They stood there watching and mooing like it was mid-February and their hay had run out days ago. They're literally belly deep in native grass and...
