    Continuous Fence Question

I have some 20 foot continuous fence panels to build a working pen. I have never built this kind of fence before. Since the fence is all metal I would think it expands and contracts a fair amount as temps change. How do you account for this expansion when putting in the corner posts? I assume...

    Pasture question

We are in the process of putting up some fence around a field that was row cropped. The ground is too wet to disc right now. Whats left is corn stalks and weeds. Part of it is 9 acres of overgrown native plants that the ground is too uneven to row crop. We are throwing plenty of round bales...

    Problem with a cows weight...

Looked at her today for a while. She is clean on her back end - no caked on poop. She poops solid and has a great apetite. None of the other cows are chasing her off the feed. We have a call into our vet to take a look at her.

    Problem with a cows weight...

We bought 3 cows from a dispersal sale in mid 2016. All are related. A 6 year old cow, her 4 year old daughter and a 4 month old heifer calf out of the 4 year old. The 6 year old and the calf arrived in good flesh and are in great shape now. The 4 year old came in really thin and has gotten...

Starting a Small Cattle Operation HELP!

Lots of good advice this thread. Sorry to say I have learned a bunch of the lessons offered here the hard way. When folks on the board say it is tough to make money at cattle it is not empty griping. There are so many expenses expected and otherwise involved in keeping cattle healthy, fat and...

    Want to establish new pasture

I did a soil test before planting and fertilized to what was indicated. The planting was a month late this year as the farmer who did the work was behind getting cotton harvested elsewhere. I am hoping to get to a perennial forage so that I do not have to disc and re-plant every year.

    Want to establish new pasture

I am in Central Texas. I have had oats planted on my pasture for the last two years. This year I would like to put the pasture into coastal. What is the timeline/procedure for getting a field ready to sprig later this spring? The soil is blackland. The pasture is in oats now but it did not come...

Whats your favorite stock dog breed?

Sorry for the loss of your dog. Over my life we have had all kinds of dogs - boxers, great danes, german shephards, mixes. Now we have 2 chocolate labs and they are really good dogs once you get past their goofy puppy stage.

    Forage supplements

I am in this exact situation. Bought 50 round bales and then found out after sampling that it is only 8% protein. Going to be another 2-3 months before the winter oats can be grazed. The cows that do not have a calf on them seem to do ok on this hay and grazing the pastures. The ones with a calf...

    Warning about B&B scales

I bought a cattle weigh scale from them in November 2015. By June 2016 it was falling apart with broken welds. It had and has not been used and is still sitting on pallets in my yard awaiting installation. B&B said leaving the scale outside was extreme neglect. First they offered to give me a...

I am wanting to fence a large yard for the dogs at the farm.

I started 6 months back not charging the bottom wire on the fence and then making 2,3 and 5 hot. That resulted in a better fence charge as it was not fighting weeds anymore and the cows figured out pretty quick they could eat along the bottom of the fence. So far everyone stays where they...

I am wanting to fence a large yard for the dogs at the farm.

If one side of the pen runs along existing 5 strand electric fence would you just put space between the cow and the dog fence? If so how much space?
