People who bash simmental don't understand how the breed changed. They are going off experiences from 30 years ago. The traditional fullblood simmental and fleckview simmental have high birthweights so when crossbred to other breeds you get into calving dystocia. That is not the case with current purebred simmentals. The breed association bred black angus into the breed and made a more moderate frame. The result is lower birthweights now. 30 years ago we had 90lb calves. I even remember one weighed 120lbs (much like todays charlais) but now our birthweights are around 60lbs. Don't get me wrong, there are still hard-calving simmentals out there. You just have to look at the EPDs for calving ease (CE) when purchasing a bull. In simmental, we would only put a calving ease of 15 or higher on a heifer. There is great heterosis when mixing simmental with angus. You get the growthier, high-maternal from the simmental and the black and smaller birthweight from the angus. Rolling W Simmentals!
