How is recovery from a bad case of mastitis? I have the opportunity to buy a nice cow/calf pair for a really good price but she's got a teat that is massively engorged. They had the vet come out and milk it. Thoughts? Is this worth my time?

does your definition of "a really good price" mean you are OK if she dies after you buy her?

If it is really a bad irreversible type of mastitis, especially as a result of injury she could get gangrene, then you could shoot her.
That's how we lost a nice jersey heifer. Other types of mastitis the cow does best with a calf keeping her milked out.
I would be cautious if she was free.

Good call. As others said, there are plenty of good cows out there...
I had to milk way too many big ugly teats and help calves get started on ones that they couldn't get their mouths around... after disposition, udder quality is my my next most important trait to cull on.
