People answered on keepingafamily cow that the problem with putting long hoses on the Surge and setting it off to the side are pump pressure problems giving cows mastitis and very difficult to clean ( by hand) long hoses. I have a metal cannula but I'm not using it. It freaks me out. Sure a person could use them on a beef cow with a balloon tit. She might loose that quarter from infection but for a dairy cow this is tragic. I have the surge milker and I like it. It can be washed and sanitized in the kitchen sink and if thats all my cow will never know she will get used to it. Other milking systems, cows also kick the claw with all the inflations off. Todays and yesterdays milkings she produced a total of 5 gallons a day. This evening the back of her bag was wrinkly and empty for the first time . Behaviorwise she still tense, jumps around and kicks at the milker but my husband tightens the rope, (its like a cow can't kick,) I say eh! and put inflations back on her and keep going like nothing happened. She knows the calf is around somewhere. She will get used to it. She is still the primadona who can't believe I am doing this "how could you!" When she is good I praise her. She is letting me rub her udder all over with the udder balm after milking and just stands there when I used the teat dip cup, Thats a first. This kicking, maybe I should also hobble her. The calf loves her milk, she is only 2 days old and is noticeably larger. I let her out of the stall today to explore, see the world and run around. I'll get pictures. Gosh she is pretty. Her little ears stick up like a goat. Huge eyes, a tiny nose and a dished face like an Arabian horse.
