    Always something…. Eye problems.

If you squirt a few cc's of lidocaine onto the eye (be about 4 inches away and be sure and take the needle off the syringe first) and wait 5 min, it is a lot easier -- mine don't resist much at all.

    fly control with ear tags

I'd appreciate any advice. In the past, I put out tubs with IGR in them, and then alternate pouring on a permethrine or abelmectin product. I only get 2-4 weeks of control when I do this. I was thinking of trying the CyLence Ultra ear tags. I have two questions: a) does using CyLence ear...

    Sick calf...not looking good

My bovine internist friend got back to me. He told me that I was partially correct. Some calves, if tube fed after 48 hours, will keep the milk in the rumen, ferment it and get scours and acidotic and possible die. Some calves will quickly empty the milk that you put into the rumen into the...

    Sick calf...not looking good

I'm glad that it worked for you. For the first 48 hours, anything going down the esophagus goes into the abomasum. After that, the calf needs to be sucking the cow (or bottle) in order to activate the esophageal groove and direct the milk into the abomasum instead of the rumen. I had a boarded...

    Sick calf...not looking good

You can only use an esophageal tube to give milk to a calf for the first couple of days of life. For the first couple of days the will go into the abomasum and you’re OK. After that, if you tube them it goes into the rumen where it ferments, causes scours, and causes acidosis. However, you can...

    Sick Calf ASAP Please

You are not going to hurt by giving multiple injections of Draxxin. I had one calf that I had to give Draxxin every other day because giving one injection would only last for 36 hours before the temperature spiked again. More importantly, when you give Banamine, also give meloxicam. The Banamine...

Bottle calf! Some say I'm crazy...

May I ask a dumb question? I've never had success getting a bottle fed calf to go to starter (they start eating hay instead). I'd put the pelleted started in its mouth, put milk powder over the starter, put milk in with the starter, put the calf in a pen by itself with just the starter, etc...
