    Navel dip

The kids were wondering why I was pushing Nutella toast for breakfast every morning. Got to empty that jar.

    Navel dip

I've found that this is the best container for navel dipping umbilical cords with iodine on newborn calves. Wide mouth, ergonomic to hold on to and strong heavy plastic.

    Chronic cough

We have had a random one out on pasture with their mom that would have a chronic cough and slight raspy breathing. They appear healthy in all other aspects but not grow as fast as their herd mates. We believe that they got sick as a calf without showing much signs and just never fully recoverd...

    Banding before a week old.

Carry a small pair of nipper pliers with you when banding. When all's done, feel for two nuts. If you don't have two, use the nippers to cut the cheerio band off and start over or wait for them to get a little older and both to drop.

    Vegan/Animal Rights Propaganda

The animal activist have been emboldened by some recent court cases they have won for activists steeling animals from "factory farms". Thier push is to teach more activist on "open rescues" where they feel morally obligated to take animals from facilities and farms where that are mistreating...

    Possible Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica)

If I remember correctly, only the Ivomec injectable works against liver flukes, not the pour-on.

    Blind calf

We had a blind calf and he was fine out on pasture with his mom. Got around okay by following her. Weaning was a train wreck. He was lost without his seeing-eye-mom. Freaked out and ran thru every fence, in an out of the road and almost drowned in a pond. You will want a good sturdy stall or...

Is there a correlation between stillborn calves and a selenium deficiency in the cow.

Why would you not feed supplemental minerals all year long? Low Selenium comes from deficiency of Se in the soil. That doesn't go away during the summer months. You would need to have soil samples done on your pasture and hay ground know for sure if your area is low in Selenium. If it's ok...

    Pennicillin availability?

What is Pennicillin best used for in cattle? We have only used it in the past 10-15 years on a calf with joint ill where he needed daily injections for a week. Most all other ailments we are using LA200 or NuFlor.

    Minerals & Salt

Still do lick the salt block. Freaks the kicks out, especially if you do it right after the cows get done with it.

    Sick calf...not looking good

We've used the pink Petobismol on a calf with scours that seemed to help.

    Hope she makes it!

We had a 12 year old cow that lost her calf that was underdeveloped. She's the friendliest cow, the kids named her Bob. She's kind of the mascot of the farm. We kept her and have had two really nice calves since, including a really nice heifer that will be my daughter's first cow and will have...

    What’s everyone using for minerals.

Has anyone else noticed Purina Wind and Rain is getting hard to get? Price is up about 25% from last year too. We've been waiting about 4 weeks for a bulk load from the local feed store, and they are out of individual bags.

    Chlorinated Water

If the water had Flouride added, will the cows have better teeth?:)

Fat cows from TSC sweet feed?

Our local TSC sells sweet feed for $12-$14 a 50lb bag. They sell shell corn for $11 a bag. Higher prices may be because of all the hobby farmers with pet goats and horses. Or maybe it's just more expensive doing business in NY.

    Yearling heifer down

We had a feeder steer go down shortly after worming the group. He seamed paralyzed. Vet said that sometimes a grub near the spine can die and abscess after worming and it damage the nerves. unfortunately he never got better and had to be euthanized.
