    Calves and minerals

I’ve got a group of 200-300lb calves (still on mommas) that have fallen in love with the minerals I have out (vigortone 3v5s). They come in with their mommas at feeding time everyday, and while moms are eating, the calves eat minerals. 10 calves will consume almost a gallon daily. The mommas...

    Cow tag info

I use different colored tags to identify my different sires. (Blue for Bo, orange for Chester, green for Murphy, etc). Easy enough to write birthdate on 1 edge of tag and dam # on other edge of tag. That’s just my system

It’s used in car washes to line the walls also.

    Sizing up the bull

It’s probably 3/16”. We just used self drilling (stainless because of the dairy) screws to install them. I’d consider just short flat headed roofing nails in an alley. We used a table saw to cut ours but I’d bet a person could score it a few times with a razor knife to cut it.

    Sizing up the bull

Local hardware store has 4’x8’ shower liner. We used it to line our dairy barn walls but should work good to line your chute and alley. Much cheaper than plywood

    Mineral tubs

I think you’re getting a protein tub, not a mineral tub

    Corral layout

3 posts in (from the cow entrance) towards the people gate, I’d hang a gate on it that’ll reach your push gate. Could chain them together to make a smaller crowding pen. Make a huge difference

    Theileriosis

I bought a group of bred heifers back in the summer. One of those contracted it. Vet confirmed it. Wound up losing her. Had to send a report to the TN state vet but that was all. Vet suspected she was infected by the time she arrived here due to the area where she came from having several...

    Chronic cough

Yes it’s still on the bottle. I’ve noticed it gets worse after she’s just finished the bottle. Planning on weaning her in a few more weeks. Definitely hope it’s the throat thing. Thank y’all

    Chronic cough

My wife has a bottle calf. It’s 3 months old. She got it from a friend with excellent herd health. It has always had a chronic dry cough. I’ve given it resflor gold, la-300, and draxxin over the course of the 3 months. Nothing has helped. She has others that came from the same source. They do...

    Dart guns

Try googling cleardart. They’re a generic dart but they do work perfectly with my pneu dart rifle.

    Pneumonia question

Never have done calf vaccines. Always started vaccinating at just before weaning. Mommas had bovi shield, vision 20/20, longrange wormer, blackleg (can’t recall which one, but I know it was the 10 way), and a lepto. Will look into the intranasal. I’ve been using resflor gold and draxxin on the...

    Pneumonia question

I know it’s not an ideal time, but I calved out some heifers in July/ early August. Now, I’m having several of the calves develop pneumonia ( I did take one of the first ones to the vet to confirm it was pneumonia). Is it just mainly due to the weather? (Hot, some rain)

    How much is too much?

Thank you. Mine get free choice loose mineral year round. This group of 28 averages about a bag/week. Do you think that is adequate or should I add a mineral tub as well?

    How much is too much?

Not interested in square baling. Only person around me with a square baler charges $1.70/bale, 250 bale minimum. And he stays pretty busy. I could round bale it if it’s an absolute necessity, but I’d much rather be able to graze it

    How much is too much?

I’ve got a pasture that I rotate cattle through. I mowed it for hay early and it has been growing back for 5-6 weeks. It’s always had some red clover in it (15-25%), but now it’s closer to 75%-80%. It’s blooming heavily and is almost knee high. I’m afraid it’ll cause them to bloat. Am I wrong?
