Used to think Simmental was fleck, and others (black) was Simmental influenced or Simmental cross, but maybe semantics for some or "upgrading" has changed that. Kinda like black Herefords, black Charolais, and other breeds that are crossed with black Angus due to the market for the Certified...

Fire Sweep sorry for the lack of moisture in your area. Looks like a good time to have an excavator clean out them ponds. Last time we had a bad drought we cleaned out the pond and it help out a lot in later years when we were dry and also catching fish.

Wished I could get 10 years out of bull. Do any of the neighboring properties have cows that have been in heat or have a bull during all of that time? If so how do you handle that (bull wanting to cross fences)?

Muddy, is this because of the good marketing of the angus association or sure enough a better product with the black (gaining weight, marbling, carcass quality)? In the store you see the label certified angus beef and I reckon the consumer thinks, well this has to be better than a package that...

Simmental are to expensive here for it to pan out. I've also thought about and would like to try Charolais, but don't know what the market here is for them and always heard about calving problems with Charolais in the past.

These are good questions and should be an interesting topic. At one time we had Simmental (fleck) cows and used angus bulls. The calves grew good, but many were not black and some were rat tail. At that time black was selling highest around here. We are doing red angus now and this years calves...

Don't savvy a black hereford, black simmental, or a black charolais. Looks like they would be referred to as an angus cross.

Longhorns are cool to look at, but how do you run them thru a squeeze chute to work. Knew a guy that him and his buddy were working their longhorns and one of them move her head and put his eye out. Wears a patch on his eye every since.
