    Young heifer bred

I'll probably get heat for suggesting it, but you should consider taking her to the stock yards. You'd make good money from her as heavy bred, and the yards are always "buyer beware"..

    Compound break

Anyone have any luck setting a compound leg break for a calf? I've tried twice and haven't had any luck. Both times the leg lost blood flow and I ended up putting them down after 2-3 weeks. I spoke to a vet and he didn't recommend bothering to set the leg with a compound. He said it's most...

    Udders influenced by bulls?

The literature that I have seen regards +/-teat and udder structure as "moderately heritable".. that would be enough for me not to retain the bull if I would potentially save replacements sired by him

A ways to green grass yet.

I tip my hat to you northern guys. I stopped feeding hay on April 12 this year.

    Fall calving

Had a pretty good fall calving. Only lost 4 calves out of a this group of 85.. not great, but I'll take it. Pastures are all played out and started feeding hay earlier this week. I'm always shocked at how much hay our fall herd eats compared to our spring herds. Over 50% more, and they...

    Branding day morning

Looks like it was a great day for it. I was going to try to work all our spring calves this weekend but canceled it because it looked like a wash out.. now they changed the prediction to just a few showers after I called off my help and made other plans 😠

    Weaning weights

He probably needs a big write-off and enjoys cattle. He trusts you to do right by him in delivering quality cattle. Sounds like you had fun filling his order and made it worth your time. Everyone's happy. Now post some pics of these girls!

    Weaning weights

You're no crook. I may question the intelligence/ good sense of some of the guys that are cutting these deals, but don't blame you for taking their money when you fulfill your part.. then again if they have this kind of money to throw around, they must be successful in some facets of their...

Heifer problems - what is it this year?

I try to check heifers twice a day in calving season. Whenever I show up and see one calving I usually don't know if she just started or has been pushing for hours. If the water is broke and I see hooves, I get the chains ready. No progress in 15-20 minutes, I'm assisting.

    Heifer

He said the bull was a beefmaster. They have a different epd rating system than angus, and I believe a CED of 4.1 is considered calving ease

Heifer problems - what is it this year?

My thoughts/opinions: 1.) I wouldn't breed heifers to a Charolais bull. The breed may have some lower birth rate bulls, but I don't think anyone would ever call char "heifer friendly".. 2.) Were the heifers pelvic measured? If not, you skipped a very important step for heifer selection.. 3.)...

    No tail?

Had one that several years ago. Vet said it wasn't a generic defect, but a fetal positioning problem. I didn't need a freezer beef and didn't want to give her away at the sale barn. Retained her and she's just had her second calf. Both calves have had tails and no issues.

    Thoughts on this bull

He may be really young but he's not very masculine. If you ignore his sheath, he'd look like a thick heifer.

    Calf with cleft lip/nostril

I'm not much help with how to care for the calf, but I'd heard that this is a common deformation caused by cattle eating low doses of hemlock early in pregnancy..may be worth checking the pastures this spring..

    Fall vs Spring

I have 1 herd of fall and another of spring calvers. Calving in the fall is a joy.. often less death loss from bad weather and mud; much more enjoyable to check the cows and calves. Fall calves typically wean around 50-75 # lighter due to nutrition. To offset this, I creep feed fall calves...
