    Last heifer calved today.

    Was it born backwards?

    Udders influenced by bulls?

If you have a commercial herd, it boils down to how much bad you can stand versus the good she does. A seed stock producer shouldn't have any cows that even sort of have these kind of teats. The rest of the cow looks pretty solid.

What is your water source in that pasture?

    Busy 20 hours

I really enjoy watching the instant transition from self-centered, freewheeling goofballs to mother cows on first calf heifers.

Suggestions for fixed blade sheepsfoot knife for castration

Grandpa cut thousands of calves with this knife while I was holding legs as a kid, and I now use it. I agree with Silver - pull the sack down and slit across the bottom inch or so, push the tip of the nut out, slice the membrane on the nut and it pops right out, then pull or scrape the cord...

    Beef heifer breeding questions

Do you have a steer you can put with them? Sometimes the steer will ride them where another heifer won't.

    Calf can’t walk

Had one a couple of years ago got kicked in the ribs by a cow. Was down that evening and could only walk a few steps. Died a couple days later from internal injuries. Stepped on ones usually same result. But if the calf is alive, gotta try.

    Photo dump.

Those panels are an instant ranch and feedlot. Nice pics.

    Wrong but consistant

Once the calf drops over the pelvic shelf it is too far down to tell accurately. My vet is pretty accurate to about 3.5 months bred. After that it's just a guess.

    Mostly Heifer calves

Well last spring was a SOB. March-mid-May was cold, windy, no pasture due to 2022 drought, feeding grass hay one day and alfalfa the next (which I usually do, but had to feed twice as much $250/ton hay with no pasture to speak of), cows were skinny. Mid-May things perked up with a bunch of...

    Mostly Heifer calves

On the cows that stuck AI we had quite a few heifers at the beginning then more bull calves. We are in the first cycle post-AI now and still getting slightly more bulls than heifers.

    Mostly Heifer calves

Sitting at 25 bulls and 19 heifers with 26 to go. They can all be bulls from this point on. I have plenty of replacement prospects and a sharp knife to make steers.

Bull calf 2 weeks early No suck reflex.

Maybe a Madigan squeeze would help? Never tried it, but here is some literature and there are YouTube videos of how to do it. https://thatsfarming.com/farming-news/the-madigan-squeeze-saved-this-calfs-life/

    New bull time

I have my original Rita cow Rita 0227 born in 2010 (still here by the way and should be calving in a week or so) then several daughters Rita 527 (2015), Rita 627 (2016), Rita 722 (2017). Then the daughters have daughters and granddaughters in the herd Rita 862 (2018), Rita 962 (2019), etc. The...

    New bull time

I keep the cow family name the same through each generation. Rita, Blackbird, Pride, Blackcap, Enchantress, etc. Each one is a separate cow family. Some breeders put the name of the sire into the cow name, which I think makes a mess. I have gone back a couple generations to find the original...

    Mostly Heifer calves

I think we got the end of the AI sired calves here. 18 bulls and 15 heifers and 2 pasture sired bull calves from cows I didn't sync. I never breed til they quit standing and breed morning and evening.

    New bull time

If the second bull looks better in person with a more level top line and can walk I would prefer him on cows to the top bull. Looking at Angus sale averages, they have been bringing good money (>$5000).

    New bull time

He's in the 50th percentile on birthweight. I don't think he would be a sleep all night heifer bull, but could serve as an all around bull if you keep an eye on your heifers. A heifer with some BW in her background might have an issue, but I would t be afraid of him. The second bull I don't...

    New bull time

Top one is DOB Oct 2022. 35th percentile calving ease and weaning weight, low marbling, big ribeye, very moderate milk, should be fairly easy keeping. Decent weaning weights probably the best thing about him. Foot score EPDs only 85th percentile if those have any accuracy. Probably not a bad...
