    Sunn Hemp

Planted the cocktail over the weekend. I still have the cows grazing down the winter rye and will take them off this weekend as the sales guy thought mung beans first and then to expect everything to emerge rapidly. I’ll be taking pictures to monitor results with temperatures, rain and time

    lets talk second cut hay

We roll out hay that I buy from the same guy every year. Seems second cutting usually has less weeds to me. That’s important in my book

    Sunn Hemp

Looking to revive this thread if there are more folks who have tried this. I'm looking at a blend with sunn hemp, pearl millet and kale for the first try. Does anyone have any experience since the feb 2022 time period that would contribute?

Hay time, out of stock pile

We have been unrolling on 15 acres of land that has never produced anything. After 4 years, last spring finally got a decent stand of natures own rye grass in the spring and we broadcasted crabgrass from a retired man who used to develop for the noble foundation. Another 5years or so I expect to...

    To much much hay???

Has anyone tried fertilizing the rye grass that naturally comes in this time of year? We have it everywhere and cows much prefer it to hay.

    To much much hay???

We got some timely rains here in north Texas and have been able to stop haying for a few weeks. Good old winter rye is a favorite of our girls. Hopefully kicking them to triticale blend before Christmas and cruise through till spring….never works quite that good 😊

    How’s your grass?

That should make for a quick auction.

    How’s your grass?

Sad to hear about your lack of grass and hay. While a lot of folks are short on grass her in north Texas there seems to be a lot of hay

    How’s your grass?

We are giving up on rain and cutting the Sudan. Storms we had last week perked it up so going to get what we can

    How’s your grass?

We got 3/4” we’d night but lost probably 20 tree’s from straight line winds. Thankful and disappointed at the same time

    This year

That looks great, I’ll try that this winter. I did do something an old rancher stopped and told me about. When we got the place he stopped by when I was working some fence just to talk. I have about an acre of not very good soil that raised a bumper crop of those big cactus. He said it had been...

    How’s your grass?

Reading some of these makes me realize how blessed we have been in north Texas so far. We had a great yield on winter hay crop from a lot of winter moisture, put down fertilizer on 20 acres of Sudan last Saturday and got 1-1/2” of rain on it last night. Never count your chickens but sure feel...

    How’s your grass?

Can I ask what that grass is? Looking to convert 20 acres to grass and looking at all options. I realize it varies by region

    How’s your grass?

Drove through your area couple week’s ago and was shocked at how short the wheat was! Friend from north of Wellington said only running around 40 BPA! Down from 60 last year. Is that all from drought I assume?

    This year

Just can’t find those around here, but I’m still looking. I’ve got a 50 horse and these 13-1500 bales make it groan the it does handle them. Like I mentioned my old feeders hold a 4’bale perfect. When weather is cooperating I try to roll bales to help build soil, I I unroll a 5x5 they end up...

    This year

What size rolls are common for your area? Around here almost exclusively farmers do 5x5 or 5x6. We lost the one guy who would roll me 4 x6 so I’m in search of someone else as my feeders are geared to 4’

    Drought plan

We probably overreacted last year in the heat (pun intended) of the drought. Culled 20% and stocked up on some good but year old hay. Planted triticale in nov and started grazing mid January. In north Texas we were blessed with plenty of rain so no more hay and didn’t pull off the winter...
