    Calf prices

Most pairs are being split and Jan-march calving cows which is common here are going to slaughter no matter of age. A weaned heifer calve will bring almost as much as a young bred cow.

Still have a fair amount of country in drought conditions too.

    $100,000 Bull

There was another $100,000 Hereford Bull sold local to me about the same time period. But the 100k only got the purchaser 1/3 semen and 1/2 physical rights. Don't guess he'll ever naturally breed a cow so the physical rights may not matter so much.

What have you experienced for basis I guess you'd call it. Say you buy some level of LRP insurance and sell august 28. That day the Index number is 1.95. Is there a good way to figure what your animals will sell for at different weights? Assuming they are good quality, and sold at one of the...

    Making money in cattle!

That is a very good point. Having a banker that never says no probably isn't the best relationship to have.

    Making money in cattle!

I do think loans need to be very carefully considered, but carefully considers isn't the kind of language that started this debate a few pages back. Using debt should be considered more strongly than spending you own money, because as many have pointed out there can be more risk in using debt...

    Making money in cattle!

Ya 90 something percent of small businesses fail. I bet that's due to more poor choices than just debt. Lots of bad ideas and poor business models regardless of debt or not. That statistic has nothing todo with whether or not debt is a bad thing or that a small business shouldn't use debt...

    Making money in cattle!

Explain to me in detail why a small business wouldn't want to consider debt as a tool. Explain the difference between small and large businesses that would mean small businesses shouldn't use debt. If you believe everything you said went over my head then maybe you can be kind enough to try to...

    Making money in cattle!

Sound like a good debt to equity balance would work well for you. You could be paying yourself that 9% on any portion of your money you so pleased along with paying someone else 9% on some more money. As long as the operation is making more than 9% on capital you make money of both your money...

    Making money in cattle!

Sure that all makes good sense. I try to stay a year ahead at least on hay inventory. And i've got quit a few cubes put up right now as well.

    Making money in cattle!

That's true of course. But there are ways to be sure you can make the payment each time. First off buying right, and not owning 100% of what they may be worth in a down market. Along with tools like LRP insurance. Helps to have a banker that understands the cattle market. One that can give good...

    Making money in cattle!

So correct me if I am wrong. Owned money has already been taxed, that what makes it under your control. Now back to the argument of debt vs owned money. If an operating note is 9% and your tax rate is anywhere from 10-30% depending on how much money you made there is a cost to having both. Big...

    Making money in cattle!

Ok, I was misunderstanded the term "owned money". Owned money meaning money that the tax (if applicable) has already been paid.

I must be missing the point your trying to make. Can you correct the flaws in my thinking? I am on here to discuss and learn. Your post didn't provide any explanation.

Wouldn't you have paid tax on that money in the year it was earned? You also "pay" inflation on your money if it's sitting in the bank. I certainly think there's a time and place for both your money and OPM. The more risk the more i'd want to be using OPM.

    Cattle futures

Thank you for paying your part of my insurance, I expect the same next year. It sounds like we both agree the government should stay out of farming but there's not chance in that happening at this point. And as long as all my neighbors and competition is taking tax dollars I will too. I'm not...

Hauling cattle to the sale barn

I worked at a small sale barn for a time and saw 2 300lb cavles get unloaded out of the back of an suv style car. From the looks of the inside and the small that was drifting out I don't think a couple calves was the worst thing that had been in that car.

    Cattle futures

The interesting thing about the LRP is the govt. pays part of the premium. So it puts the odds a little more in your favor vs the regular insurance markets that statistically are against you.

Big runs at Texas sale barns

Seems like the dealers around here that are still open have switched to the side by side's and under 75 hp tractors to stay in business. It amazes me how many of these new land owners by a little tractor. I'd be surprised if they get 50 hours per year on most of them.

Big runs at Texas sale barns

The city people are pushing out the small and big farmers alike here. They are moving out from DFW or from other states and paying double what even the big time farmers are willing to pay. Seeing lots of acres just sit and some are just cut for hay instead of cattle or crops. That hay deal is...
