    Hay Traps

What thickness is generally desireable for hay coverage? We are not completely happy with the life we have received from ours...which are 15mm thick...silver.

====== Jo..., Do you know if she had jersey in the mix? Some of the best beef we have had is a jersey x Angus.

    Anaplasmosis

Lost the cow 30 hours later. MoGal, Yes the parasite attaches itself to the RBC's and prevents oxygen from being transferred. Consulted with two vets...one to verify the guidance from the other. There is not much chance to save the animal once the clinical signs have begun...if I understand the...

    Anaplasmosis

The flys have been TERRIBLE this summer. We have our first ever case of Anaplasmosis. A 5 year old 1100# Angus x Herford (black/white face F-1)with a 4 month old calf. She is disorented, muscles trembling, with somewhat agressive posituring, for an otherwise calm, gentle cow. Her gums are a...

    Plan O' Attack

Mudge.., You can do it but, I will predict you will probably only do it a time or two. We have a short horn Jersey/Brown Swiss and always put an extra calf on her when she calves. It is a 3-5 day ordeal to get her to accept the calf.....while she is eating her favorite sweet feed mix....which...

    Cow grinding teeth!

That animal is stressed or has a physical condition/developing. I have seen them grind teeth when a wire/metal object is caught in the jaw. Probably not associated with the PG. I would check her health out carefully.

    cattle guards

Looks like a good guard..but, expensive 4" angle Iron and inverted car/truck shock absorbers!!! :) ;-) To reduce roughness, recessing it about 4" is indicated..IMHO. A neighbor has one and likes it.

    tranquilizing before slaughter

Salem, I would bring her home and harvest her in the field after she settles down. A few days at least. Coordinate it with the processor. Many writings about the adrenalin effect on the meat. Deer hunters are realizing that a belly shot with tracking and final kill hours away almost ruins...

    Sexist Calves?

We also have seen this phenominon. I am convinced it is hormonal. One of our excellent 2200#+ bulls didn't like us guys when he was small and doesn't now. We just seem to agree to disagree...and we stay away from him. Gina, our female helper can manage and lead him around like a puppy dog...

    Docking dairy cows tails

Could never understand a valid basis for doing that. The animal uses the tail for fighting flies including the switch which is an effective part. In the milk parlor, as a child, we had a spring loaded rope with connector which took 2 seconds to attach to the tail about 6" from end which...

How many head of cattle do you have?

For what ever reason DR had for the question(explanation would help) the answer is anonymous and should be answered with sincerity. Otherwise it is a futile effort and of no value.

    Number of cows per bull

===== tm..., You may wish to refine your question....for workable advice. Examples; If it is your objective to control bull numbers and cost.... that can be acomplished by keeping the bulls seperate from the cows and control mounting at each heat. A bull can service many more heats. Be aware...
