    Round Up ?

I have about 4 miles of hi-tensile electric fence that I weed whip 4 times a year. I started out with the Roundup and found the same thing as the other guys, I ended up with a lot of weeds that was worse than the grass. I have let the grass come back and now I bush hog right up next to the...

    Butchering a flighty steer

This steer is a Waygu/limosin cross that I have fed well since I got him and can't wait to have him to dinner. I am willing to pay what it cost to have him shot on the farm, if I can get it done that way. If I can't I'm still wondering how is the meat affected by the ride, and how long does it...

    Butchering a flighty steer

I am getting ready to have a steer butchered and he is still a little on the flighty side. My question is, how long does it take for the adrenalin to work its way out of the meat after the "last ride"? The man that I want to process the steer may be willing to come to the farm and shoot him on...

    Rustoleum

I've had good luck with yellow and white but not with red and black. 2 years ago I dismantled my 6X10 trailer down to the frame. Cleaned it wire brush and sanded. Put on Rust. primer and 2 coats of Gloss Black. Put on a new 2X6 pressure treated floor sure looked good when I was done. Now the...

    Cows and cold weahter

    New calves a little wild!

Thanks for the replies. I walked over to the neighbors and he let me have my pick. They all act like angels when they are home, but like kids, they act up when they get out on their own I guess. I got 2 heifers and 1 steer, they are Wagui/ Limo. cross. I just plan on getting some weight on them...

    New calves a little wild!

I just got 3 500-600 pound calves from my neighbor 7 days ago. They got shots, wormed and taken to a scale to get weighed. They have been in the corral for 7 days and are still pretty jumpy. My question is, how long will it take for them to settle down? I have been going up twice a day and...

How much to lease pasture or a farm in KY

Don't know if this is what your after, but in my part of KY if someone wants to lease it for cattle it usually goes for $6 - $8 per head per month. A lot of folks around me do this, that no longer farm and want to keep the fields knocked down.

    What makes Prime

Thanks for the responses. In my part of KY most everything is black, I don't know if thats because the market demands it or if Angus is just that much better. Ask 10, get 10 different opinions. I want to buy local. I'm not sure how many producers in the county will be able to produce EPD's...

    What makes Prime

I was forced to sell all of my stock and will let my fields recover from the drought. I want to cut back, and raise a few calves to sell as finished beef to individuals. My question is, what does it take to make prime grade? Is it all genetics? Is it how it is raised and finished? Is it a...

Talked to the neighbor, he says what he saw hanging out the back of her was about 2' long an inch in diameter and redish brown. It may have been there for a day before he noticed it. An oldtimer stopped by and looked at her and said he thinks she still has her calf and its not dead. Says she...

    where the heck is it?

The reason I wanted to try the immobilizer is that all of our cows and steers don't always want to be patient! I'm tired of trying to give SQ shots to a the odd wild one. I don't enjoy trying to give a shot under the eyelid when I get that one bad case of pinkeye. My cows don't seem to like that...

    calf weaner question

I am thinking of trying calf weaners on a few calves . I was wondering if they stay in fairly well. How tight do you put them in? I was thinking about some I saw in Valley Vet that have the wing nut adjustment (nylon w/ points). What are your experiences with these and how well do they work...
