    Wild heifer on the run

The meat will be tough if she is all tensed up and nervous. Any time one is butchered that way it will not be as good.

    Anyone doing this?

My parents started a herd years ago from dairy cross heifers that they bought and bucket fed. Most dairies around here will use a black low birth weight bull or even a Hereford bull to breed their first calf heifers. We used to get the calves from a couple dairies, band the bull calves and sell...

    Ole Timey Cattle

Jogeephus, Does your uncle have piney woods cattle or are you just calling them woods cattle because he lets them roam? There's also a line of Longhorn cattle called the Woods line that were kept by a fellow named Grady Woods. His family had them for around 100 years. They are one of the purest...

    Wettin' my feet

We get ours at the Co-Op and it's a pasture or range mineral blend for this time of year. I can't remember what it's actually called but ask your feed store-they should be able to recommend a mineral for your location. Our cattle eat it all the time-I do believe it really helps.

    Wettin' my feet

Hey there new guy, I am nor an Angus expert so can't say much about them. But I don't think your cattle look that bad. Worming and some good minerals will do them wonders. Get yourself some loose minerals from the Co-Op or Southern States or whatever feed store you have in your area and make...

    Ole Timey Cattle

I guess if you drank any kerosene nowadays it'd kill you-probably got so much junk in it.

    Ole Timey Cattle

Yep, my cattle will clean up a place like that. I got em running in places like that all over the county. We used to let our cows chew on the tobacco stalks in the fall and winter as we stripped the tobacco. Was just the trick to give em a good worming. And Kerosene, sugar and raw eggs cured...

    Ugly betty competition

Cowdirt, I don't think I need any more cows right now, but he did say she was raising a good cross bred calf. I have some homely cows that are doing the same thing, they're easy to keep and always raise a fat calf. Isn't that what's it's all about?

    Some resemblance ??

That sure is a nice cow/calf pair. That's a heck of a heifer she has nursing.

What Would You do With This Cow?

Guess I don't understand why you are so mad at the cow, she's a cow, that's how they act sometimes, especially if a gate was half open. I guess I'd be mad at myself, not the cow. If I sold or killed all the cows that make me mad I wouldn't have but one or two left. She looks like a good cow...

Who would you pick - warning, many pics!

All good looking calves- I like the baldy, she might gentle down some later, who know? The #5 heifer is a really nice heifer. Gotta give her momma credit for raising that one. Shows you that a little cow can do a good job. I'd keep that one for sure.

    Black Cow????????????

grubbie, I sold half Longhorn, 1/4 Beefmaster, 1/4 Beefalo calves at the sale barn, they were solid black, had small horns, a little bit of ear. They brought 1.20 a lb. The Longhorn sire was black and white spotted, very thick and beefy. The 1/4 Beefalo blood came from a solid black Brangus...

    Longhorn Bull behavior

I've never seen a bull do this. No clue as to why he would pick on one calf, but I would be a little bit concerned as to whether he would hurt the calf or not. I don't know what to tell you. Does he only do this when the calf is brand new? I guess I'd keep a close eye on him and maybe separate...

Couple of pics of our new farm

Nice place. Congrats on the new farm. Good job on those working pens and chutes.

Is it always so nerve racking?

I saw something in the earlier post about alfalfa hay and your heifer that died. Be careful giving them alfalfa, it can bloat and kill them.

    Branding,...how we do it...

We brand our heifers and any bulls that we deem worthy of breeding or marketing at our vet's office when we have him OCV them. We do the branding but as he runs them through the chute and gives the shots and ear tags we throw the brand on them. Of course we have to brand them fairly young or...

    What is he?

Looks like a Jersey from what I can see of him. Doesn't look like a cross.

    Corriente beef

If you feed them up they're good beef, I know alot of folks who feed out their used Corriente and Longhorn steers. Most people who have tried the lean beef like it. Not everyone likes all the fat and waste of some of the other breeds. We usually grass feed our Longhorn beef but maybe put them on...

    Check out her eyes !

Joy, I have a cow that was just as wild as yours as a young calf, her mother is a Peeler type Longhorn, big, beefy type but she is really skittish. You can't touch her. So I figured this calf would be just as skittish as her mama. She grew up to be probably the gentlest in the herd. I can go out...
