I haven't posted much lately for several reasons. One is that the time I spend here can usually be spent more productively in other areas such as actually doing farm work or be engaged in other more important ventures. Secondly, to be honest, I got bored with the same arguments, questions...

    Building fence

Run a hot wire on the inside of a fence with steel posts and you can eliminate the need for wood posts between the braces.

    Corral suggestions

Always build your working/loading facilities a little higher and a little stronger than you think you need to. You'll be thankful you did someday. Also, I'd stay away from used cross ties. The railroad got rid of them because their useful lif was up. I've used them and lived to regret it. I'd...

    More Fence Questions

I've got a spring loaded driver and it works great unless the ground is extremely hard. I switch to my regular driver on hard ground because you do lose some of the driving force due to the spring action. But it sure alleviates having to lift it every time you drive a post.

oh no oh no no no no

TNMasterCowBoy, you've got an answer for everything, don't you? Did you not read where there was a bear involved? Gentler cattle, indeed! Let's see how you, your cows, and dog react to a bear in the pasture. So, pray tell, what is your contingency plan in the event of a bear on the farm?

Building a Pen. I need Suggestions (Photos?)

Barbed wire would be sufficient to hold your cow. As already stated, cows don't require room to play. Breeding and eating is all that's on a cow's mind. Barbed wire goes up fairly quick and easy. Brace it properly and place line posts about 12 feet apart and the fence should give you...

How do I cope with Butchering..???

We used to raise bottle calves when I was a kid. It was mine and my brother's responsibility to feed them after school. Daddy warned us not to get attached to them but he needn't worry. After being butted and kicked and knocked around by them, it was a PLEASURE to eat them! 8) We even called...

    Rodeo bulls

I Googled "Bodacious" the other night and he was a Charbray. I also heard several years back that he was an even natured bull that allowed people to approach him in the pasture. I followed a link (can't remember the name) and bucking bull semen is HIGH! They're sure proud of those bulls!

Help - what breed is he?

Countrygirl, 1.) Stay away from cattle with Brahman breeding in them until you've become more experienced. They can be unpredictable. 2.) Buy some black baldy or Hereford cows. They are usually easy to handle and can be bred to several breeds of bull to produce an acceptable product. 3.) Before...

How Many Bales Are You Feeding

Zero. They're grazing on stockpiled fescue and they look fine. They have gotten 3 lbs/hd of range cubes since it has turned colder, but that has only been every so often on wet cold nights.

    Your best tips & practices...

Sure, I'll elaborate. Looks mean nothing if there is no utility value or substance present. I've seen show winning cattle that do not produce. I wonder if a Westminister Champion dog can actually do the job it was intended for? Oftentimes not. My old tractor isn't a thing of beauty but it is...

    Your best tips & practices...

Let grass feed your cattle as much as possible. Keep a 4-wheel drive on the farm whether it's a truck, Jeep, or tractor. Build a rugged set of catch pens that'll take all the punishment cows can dish out. Buy Rustler jeans instead of Wrangler cowboy cut. They're cheaper and tougher. Use electric...

    is this one too big

As has been already stated, if she's fleshed out that well on summer grazing alone, she's a fine specimen. I like her.

    Getting #350s to #600s (Correction #400-450)

I'd sell them now. I wouldn't put any more in them than you already have.
