That cows don't eat it and it doesn't get flies.

How is that mineral? I've heard good and bad about it.

    Opinions: Electric Fence

I don't know anything about legal or illegal in Texas or Arkansas for that matter with fencing but most people in Arkansas only use 2 strands of electric fence. We fenced in a new area last year and we did two strands along the perimeter and one to separate paddocks. A lot of people are even...

Any loose mineral is better then none in my opinion however.

    Another Calf

Its Sunbelt brand i believe but we have also used Purina...I'm not sure EVERYTHING that's in it but we put emphasis on iodine and selenium and the Sunbelt is a good source of both of those minerals and we also add extra iodine and selenium to it just to make sure they get it in their system...

    ways for profit

I was wondering the same thing.

    Electric Fence

Our calves are like that. It wont hurt them and they will just go right through it but once it gets them they won't go ANYWHERE near it again lol.

    Electric Fence

We use Gallagher chargers and haven't had any problems with them thus far. We have 2 solar powered ones and a plug in one. They work just fine.....especially the plug in one lol it will knock you down. Its popped me a few times.

    ways for profit

Buy some cheap thin heifers and raise them from there and/or buy some older already bred cows and start from there. There's a lot of ways you can go with this. When we got back in the cow business a few years ago my dad and brother and I each bought a thin 350 pound heifer and I began raising...

    Sale barn ?

CB I'm confused here I thought you said Angus sells the best in your area because black is the best colored hide that has ever been created? Next to the black baldy which also has black hide. And now your saying you won't even bid on one? A little black cow will raise a heck of a calf. We have...

Information overload and a little disappointed?

Longhorn beef is supposedly the healthiest beef you can get. It is really lean and not real fatty.

Information overload and a little disappointed?

I think all the advice that is being given here is great advice. Let me put my 2 cents in here since you have mentioned Longhorns and that is what we run. We have Longhorn mommas with Charolais bulls and the calves are doing great. Your not going to get as much for the calf ($900-$1100) but...

    Tracking Technology & Cattle

What we use isn't an actual tracking device but its how we keep up with our cattle. We don't track them or anything but its an app on the iPhone and iPad called Herd. Its free to download then its $17 to be able to put in as many cows as you want. Its more for a feedlot I think but it works...

    Head per acre clarification

I agree with everyone here.....4 acres is enough for probably one cow/calf pair or 2 feeder steers maybe 3 since you said you had access to some feed and hay. I would be scared to run 2 of my Longhorns on only 4 acres. I would go the feeder route if I were you.

    Another Calf

A good mineral source is very important. We bought a lot of our cows last year (older cows from the sale barn) and most of them bred back in 3 months so they had a calf a year from when they had their last calf. A year being on our mineral system most of them are breeding back in 4-6 weeks...

    Another Calf

Ours start breeding back at 1 month after calving. We run bulls year round. If they don't have a calf within 12 months of calving then they are more then likely gone.

Growing out calves to start up?

Nothing wrong with being a hay hoarder never know when you may need it. We lost two hay meadows this year which makes about 50 bales each cutting so we are having to find around 350 more rolls of hay or land to replace that. That's what I like about the blocks as well they are very easy and...

Growing out calves to start up?

A lot of people plant wheat around here...that would be what we would probably plant if we planted anything.

Growing out calves to start up?

We let the cows graze one of our hay fields during the winter...we rotate them on and off of it and there is usually a lot of green grass grown up out there. I do wish we would plant some ryegrass though....we are in the process of getting ready to chicken litter one of our pastures so That is...
