    Analyze this Hay

I appreciate the comments. There definitely will be supplementing this year, looks like I can get some 13-15% protein Alfalfa large squares for about $100 per ton.

    Analyze this Hay

Dave, I'm honestly not familiar with how to interpret NDF versus TDN. How do you read that? Also, what little I do know about fiber and about this hay would lead me to say that you are accurate, I just dont know how the NDF numbers show that. This was very late 1st cutting when we were already...

    Analyze this Hay

Listen here, if we wanted your sass, we would have asked for it. :D Only about a foot of snow right now. You missed deer hunting up here in waist deep snow though. Visibility was great but was too deep for the ranger and too fluffy for the snowmobile so the hauling was no fun.

    Analyze this Hay

Butch, thats kinda my thoughts as well but here's one other factor that caused me to test. I noticed their piles are a lot firmer than I would like to see, not horse crap but also not a pie. Usually they arent quite that firm on this hay. I market my feeders as grass-fed and finished but I can...

    Analyze this Hay

Texas Bred and others, here's a fun one for you. This is my primary, first cutting hay. Both my cow herd and yearlings will be getting this free choice. Ordinarily, this is ALL the cow herd would get but I'm not happy with the condition we are carrying into the winter and so I'm prepared to...

    Guess the weight

If I plan to produce a terminal cross, they will be mostly sold as feeders to an all natural feedlot, not finished for my specific customers, hence, maximizing poundage.

    Guess the weight

That "mutt" cow you posted is anything but a nightmare. I would also guess she cant be over 1300 lbs? Don't misunderstand me. I'm by no means saying that everyone needs a back angus, very maternal, cow herd. To each their own. But at the same time, the way I see you blending to get the best of...

    Guess the weight

BTW, This is the moderately inbred, old genetics, crappy EPD bull that sired the runty calf out of the mongrel cow. :-D https://youtu.be/E49MKuKymEU He works for me.

    Guess the weight

Vince, I think I've been on this board for about 5 years and I've only been breeding beef cattle for 6-7 but I've said for the last 4-5 my goal is to consistently grow my her by retaining females that I know will be long-lasting, maternal cows after all the mess I started with by having a mix...

    Guess the weight

Figures a lousy "hobby trader" like Kenny would go and ruin the game :-D. Off by a whopping 25 lbs. total. Cow is 986 and the calf is 321. If I can step on my soapbox for a minute, this is the elusive 1100 cow that many of you dont think exists. 1000 lbs. now and will be another 100 pounds...

    Guess the weight

First big run must have started in the last two days judging by all the clowns in the river. I gotta get out there before Saturday since I will be out of town for a week after that.

    Guess the weight

One more of this pair while we wait for a few more guesses. This is from 9/1. If it changes anyone's mind, go back and edit your post. Maybe I will send the winner some syrup. I know at least Vince will take it more seriously if I dangle that carrot.

    Guess the weight

Ran this pair across today. I think it will be a fun guessing game given people's varying cow size preference here. Guess this three year old's weight and her May 15 calf.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Totally fair point. I don't know why I like learning things the expensive way, but it seems to perpetually happen. That being said, this wont sneak up on me again.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Just an FYI to all. Lost the calf this afternoon. He was low energy this morning and momma's bag was tight so I knew he wasnt nursing well anymore. Tubed him with water and electroylytes but didnt hope for much. I'm still not totally convinced this was coccidiosis since I've never had it here...

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

TC, I'm actually using Albon because the Sustain calf wasnt available.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Sorry, should have mentioned it is getting LA200 also. The calf weighs probably 120 and the dosage is one bolus per 200 lbs.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Can't say that I see much of a change but maybe slightly better and not any worse. Still looks pretty miserable. I gave him another sulfa bolus this morning.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Thank you to all again. I had had a few old-time farmers advocate for just ignoring it but you guys did make me re-think that and calf has been treated with Albon (sulfadimexothone) and I will keep on top of it.

    Rectal Bleeding on a calf

Thanks all. Ron, I know what you are talking about and this definitely isnt that. He now does look a little loagy and low energy also. I'm thinking the armchair vet diagnosis here is probably right. It's been a miserable spring here so we have kept everyone on a pretty small sacrifice area with...
