    AKAUSHI

From my limited experience with the F1's (approaching 20 head now) I think the first cross is comparable to whatever breed they are used on in regards to growth. That being said, from my experiences, they do in fact increase quality grade significantly and consistently. I'm not necessarily...

    Bull for discussion.

Good looking specimen! Who is it?

    Simmental vs Hereford Bull

You really need to look into those VQA sales. They will ALWAYS bring more than CH (by a mile). I think you'd really benefit from it. You should talk with Phil Blevins about the program. Best thing we've done to help the bottom line in a long time.

    Simmental vs Hereford Bull

How far are you from Dublin? We've sold with the Dublin Feeder Cattle Assn. for several years now on the TeloAuction and we've been pleased. They do dock the reds, but we rarely have a red calf nowadays. You should check it out if you are close. Abingdon FCA does a bang up good job getting...

    Simmental vs Hereford Bull

How do you market your calves? Straight off the cow, weaned/pre-con 60d, etc., value-added sale or sale barn?

    Show your calf pictures.

donkey(s) that kill calves become buzzard bait around here. if you plan on keeping them, maybe they will grow out of it. not worth the risk to me. good luck either way!

    Cow Longevity

My cattle do that too (no brimmer influence). I can do anything I want with my cows as long as I am by myself. If I bring company (kids, etc.) they are extra cautious and will head for the back 40. I have learned to do like you do and pen the cows by myself prior to any working, hauling, etc. or...

    Fall colors

Thanks for posting. Those pictures AND CATTLE are amazing! Beautiful scenery, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't stand the winters up there. I'd love to see Canada someday in my lifetime, but would prefer Fall WELL before winter. haha Thanks again for posting. Those are some VERY NICE Charolais...

    How's this for photogenic?

You did well on those mommas! They'll make $$. The longer you keep those calves, the more they'll show LH. I've had a few LHXChar calves in my lifetime, and as long as you sell them before they get real stretchy, they'll do just fine.

    AKAUSHI

I'd say they are comparable, for sure. I've only had one JerseyX heifer that I fattened and sold. Marbled well, smaller REA, lower yield, lighter carcass. It was good meat, and our customers liked it. Personally, I feel that the AKx calves are going to be the better option for yield, but quality...

    AKAUSHI

I got the semen from Heartbrand. I used the same bulls in Y1 and Y2, but mixed it up in Y3. Haven't got to Y3 calves yet to see if there is any difference between the lines. I think the Akaushi offers more for the commercial cattleman than the black wagyu. If push comes to shove, I feel...

    AKAUSHI

I have had exceptional luck with the AK semen. Smaller sample size (10-20 per breeding) but over the last 3 years, I have AVERAGED 75%. Highest I ever got was 9/10. Fall cows bred up better than Spring, but we bred the Springers on July 4th and it was HOTTT!!! We breed Fall calvers the week of...

    Optimal weaning weight?

I'm with bird dog. I prefer to use weight per day of age. I think it is a more accurate measurement, especially if you have calving seasons of 90d or longer. We don't, but still like to use it. It's much easier than discounting or adding weaning weight to calf because they are younger or older...

    Mashona vs South Poll

Nailed it! Pretty ain't always profitable, especially if you don't have the name recognition of some of the big seedstock outfits. Commercial outfits have to look at things differently...or should I say SHOULD look at things differently. Old habits die hard though.

    Mashona vs South Poll

I had a pile of extra (mediocre) hay several years ago and bought a load of bred cows a couple states away. Pics were of some pretty nice cattle. When they were delivered, they shot off the trailer like a herd of greyhounds on raceday. I ended up with a handful of some LH or Corriente type...

    Mashona vs South Poll

Our processor is booking for Nov. 2021 harvest already. We've booked our direct market beef dates through Dec. 2021. They will not let us book 2022 yet, but it'll be coming soon.

    Heifers

Good way to select for fertility! We AI, sometimes cleanup once with AI, and then the season is over at 30d. (whether by no more AI or pulling cleanup) It works, but man it sux to see some of those fancy heifers come back in heat after that. It takes some discipline to do, but in the long run...

    Any Update on Charlo

I'm with Josher. I've never used him, but he does show up in a lot of pedigrees. Personally, I do not like him as good as some of his sons. I think the Coleman program has quite the reputation for cattle that work for the cattleman. I believe if you protect him, or his sons, on height, they will...
