    Paternal vs Maternal in Crossbreeding

I've often thought that a good way to breed cattle would be if one could buy highly adapted maternal females from somebody nearby and breed to a very paternal terminal bull. All offspring is sold and any needed replacements are purchased each year.

    Bull Market Flooded

Are these sorry registered bull calves bringing any premium over a commercial slaughter animal of the same age/quality? If so, it would seem to be a case of a seller providing for a demand.

    Bought some F1 Charbray

Do you expect the 1/4 ear market calves to do well in your area?

Horned Cattle Update (Nothing here for you he-man cattle guys)

Probably just one of those interesting ideas that I want and wish would work.

Horned Cattle Update (Nothing here for you he-man cattle guys)

It is time to revive the discussion on beef bulls crossed over Longhorn and Corriente cows. There were a few posters operating this way...can you provide any updates on how things are going? I believe low purchase price and low cost to run a cow were some of the touted benefits. And now...

    Barzona Cattle

GHzFarms, We're in Schuyler County. I've had curious interest in the Barzona breed for some time and would enjoy visiting about them at your farm some day if we pass through your part of Iowa. I had assumed that they are hot weather creatures, but it's good to hear they are performing...

    Barzona Cattle

Ah, yes, reviving the Barzona thread. GHzFarms, what state are you located in? I believe Jim Gerrish ran Barzona cattle in his Missouri days, and an senior grass farmer here in North Missouri just dispersed his crossbred herd.

The good, the bad...and the Corriente

That is a valuable, and somewhat profound remark. I think I'll write it down.

The good, the bad...and the Corriente

I'm not setting this as a goal so much as just initiating interesting discussion. The "WHY" would be to purchase more starter cows for less investment. The object would not be to raise Corriente X calves. (although that's what would take place for several years) The object would be to "breed...

The good, the bad...and the Corriente

We're not getting alot of raving reviews here. I was considering a follow up question about using cheap/tough/ugly Corriente cows to breed up to a specific type of cattle over several generations, but will refrain for fear of rotten produce being thrown. Example: Red Angus Bulls over...

The good, the bad...and the Corriente

Reviving the Corriente discussion. Who has had experience with Corriente Cattle? Bash them or praise them based on your experience. They have horns, they have no rear end, they are ugly etc. etc. Burke Teichert once remarked "They never get sick and they always get pregnant".

    Some KY commercial cattle.

    Sheep love it.

    Fertility

The following pertains to meat goats, and may be totally irrelevant. The meat goat industry is light years behind the cattle industry in terms of EPDs, EBVs and almost every other area in the field of genetics. Use your own judgement, proceed with caution etc. We have been told that...

    Bradford breeding?

"The cows might perform well there..dont know how well your markets value eared calves.ive found that sometimes liking something, and actually needing something, Ain't worth the effort.." Excellent point...When selling livestock, I have never yet had a buyer ask how much I like them. Just how...

    Bradford breeding?

Hope this doesn't make me a hijacker. Just how far north could F1 Braford cows perform as mamas?

    Environment Cattle

Would you trust 1/2 or 1/4 blood brahmans anywhere north of, say I-70? (Nebraska, Wyoming, etc.)

    Environment Cattle

Jehosofat, What do you expect might be the results on a reverse scenario? Heat and fescue adapted cattle from your geographical area transplanted to Kansas, Montana & Wyoming?
