Feed for weaning and growing calves?

This is what i've done in the past. higher protein after weaning, and even using this as a finishing ration, ending on straight WSC (free choice hay of course). Seems like it works pretty well. I have a yearling bulls I'm holding back to cover the herd this winter. I currently have then on about...

    Grain Finishing Angus Steers

I was targeting about 12% protein up to about 1000 pounds, then went to 10, if I remember right. The last month or two straight corn is fine.

    Grain Finishing Angus Steers

That’s great! I think the key to our business is more consumer direct sales. Keep it up!

    Grain Finishing Angus Steers

I agree with September/october, and also that more time on high energy grain helps marbling a ton. We fed 1/2% of body weight for probably 6 months before bumping up the intake, at around 1000 pound live weight. Meat is wicked good. Bought bulk corn from co-op and that’s cheap feed. Also I...

    Grain Finishing Angus Steers

I fattened out two steers this past year on whole corn and soybean meal and free choice hay. The meat is excellent and it turned out to be a pretty cheap way to feed. Started 6lbs/day of grain, and increase a pound every couple days to 25lbs. Figure 3-3.25/day gain at 25lbs of feed, and...

    Feeding out a couple steers

So this steer went to a customer, but he is raving about the meat. The steer in keeping just got butchered today, so we’ll see.

    Feeding out a couple steers

steaks from one of the steers! It's not a great picture, but I'd say the marbling looks pretty good right? Especially out of a Summit sired steer (summit has pretty poor carcass merits).

    Feeding out a couple steers

So he is hanging at 809pounds. I’m happy. First steer I’ve fed out as the decision maker. I’ll add ribeye pics when the time comes.

    Butcher calves not eating

Thanks for all ideas. The sbm has been cut off. So just brome hay and whole corn from the coop. So shouldn’t be too high of protein. As far as the level of finish, he has a bit of a fat pocket near tailhead. Under his brisket he has a softball size of fat, rather than the typical cantaloupe...

    Butcher calves not eating

My experience so far has been, with the option of 25-30 pounds of grain, steers are only able to eat a bit of hay, and will choose the grain over hay given the choice. This steer likes hay better I guess.

    Feeding out a couple steers

He is 18-19 months now. We will see on the cost to butcher. The locker told me they average about $1/lb total cost (all fees). Which seems high, but it was the only place we could get in to.

    Feeding out a couple steers

Well as a follow up to the steer feeding. Here is what it produced. For an S Summit steer, I think he turned out looking alright. He's like a barrel with feet. I don't have a picture from the back, but he's wide (a little bit of the angus hatchet, but oh well). We will have to see how he looks...

    Butcher calves not eating

So, I have an issue right now with a steer eating whole corn as well. Maybe you can help! It's a dairy/angus cross 16 month old steer. He's been on a 1% of bw corn diet (plus SBM) for several months (free choice hay also). We have been trying to bump him up to 25 pounds of corn to finish him...

    Charge for sides of beef

I have two steers I’ve fed out, and I’m selling as halves to a couple folks. Any idea what is the going rate for halves on the rail? Or what’s the best way to price them? Thanks!

    Feeding out a couple steers

They won’t leave the grass. Based on some studies I saw, it basically comes down to how fast you want them to gain. They’ll eat all the grain you give them, and then fill up on forage. So fast gain means feeding more grain, but finishing in less days.
