    Oh, the drama!

Let them get to the age where they can track mom down themselves and I think you’ll be golden.!

    New bull time

With those back feet I would flip him come fall and watch for something to come through from a place needing new blood in the herd. Glad you finally got the bull you needed.

    New bull time

Very common in some breeds to keep the name on the maternal line. Some go back decades. To answer your other question the America bull that is listed as the paternal grand sire is the one all the fuss was made about. Seems like he faded out of the limelight pretty quick, which is what happens...

    One in 11.2 million

Poor girl. There’s not much left of her after all that.

Heifer killed old cows new calf

Cattle in heat are a danger as they are only paying attention to their hormones. Youngstock can be as well; I saw a new calf get pretty mauled when it slipped into a pen of Holstein heifers. Bunch of curious teenage bullies. Keep them separated if you can.

    Birthweight

Was reading some random articles from Meat and Livestock Australia and found this interesting tidbit: Dystocia is an abnormal or difficult birth or labour, and results from a foetal-pelvic disproportion. Several factors can cause dystocia, including: large calf size – a function of genetics...

    Summer calves

Keep an eye out for fly strike. Doesn’t take much time before it gets bad on them.

    Missing calf!

He turned up this afternoon. Thank goodness!

    Missing calf!

Just had one take off in me. Three fences were no deterrent. He was last seen headed west into the woods. All I can do is hope but I’m still sick about it.

    Steer with mislocated penis

That’s my question too. Seen several pseudohermaphrodites with weird parts in weird places. As long as he can urinate and is castrated he should be fine.

    OB/Breeder Sleeves

The Udder Tech products are very durable just don’t put them in the dryer as it can damage the waterproofing.

older cow with bad bag..but new heifer calf...what are the odds of her passing bad bag to new calf?

In my experience, pretty good odds the calf will have some version of her dam’s udder but not always. I have two full sisters whose dam, granddam and great granddam were all phenomenal calf raisers but they ended up being culled late in life for poor udders. One is being culled this year at the...

Keeping a twin heifer for a replacement

https://news.cals.wisc.edu/2000/08/18/rounding-up-the-genes-for-twinning-in-cattle/ From the article: "Our work has now confirmed the existence of at least one gene on cattle chromosome 19 that affects ovulation rate," says Brian Kirkpatrick, a University of Wisconsin-Madison animal geneticist...

    Twin Girls

I like to pen mine up until the calves are vigorous enough to hunt mom down if they get separated, usually a week or so. I have one girl that has twinned twice, nursed both for about 48 hours then votes one off the island. She wouldn’t raise two great calves without help anyway so I’m content to...

    25% chance for red

Always love a wide blaze face, even when they weren’t in style. And red to boot out of a nice cow. Yay! Jeanne is right. It is hard to find a red bull that does what you want it to. Edit: red Simmental bulls. Lots of good Red bulls in other breeds.

More Calf Blood for Fake Meat ?

I don’t know why this part of “no kill” meat isn’t pointed out more. Fetal calf serum is needed to produce this cultured meat. Where do people think this comes from? I don’t see places where calf fetuses can line up and donate plasma. Instead of slaughtering one animal they are selectively...

    Simmental Bulls for AI

What's your likes/dislikes so far? I have two May heifers and a bull right now, pleased with all three but the heifers both have a slightly bigger flight zone than what I am used to. Any other red bulls on your radar?

    Calf puller

I like the Calf EZE puller. Dual action with a separate hook for the head snare, smooth pole. Some don’t like it because the cams slip on a hard pull but my theory is that if they slip you are pulling too hard anyway. Used it last year for the first time in many many years but was glad I had it...

    priefert so1 vs s04

Anyone have experience using the transport for these chutes? Watching the video it looks like a pain in the azz compared to the For-Most chute I am used to. Don't like the fact that the wheel is in the way on the For-Most if you need to have someone tail a calf for castrating but it's a snap...

    Not Seen This Before

Interesting that quite a few of the posters that have seen this have Simmentals with the exception of the OP and the Jersey. My cow family that does this is Simmental.
