How long to leave bull on small group of cows

70 days. Sell the opens and make no excuses for them. Couple years of that you can make a pretty productive, profitable herd.

    Pregnant cow showing heat?

I agree with what’s been said. I think false heats are very common. I had one I saw in standing heat about a month ago. She was standing hard. No bull with them, but the calves and other cows rode her hard. I marked her down as a “repreg” when I pulled them off the wheat in January. Guess...

Hoping this is a good sign

Very cool. Always nice to see. I think this might be the first time in history a vet palpitated one correctly.

N Semen Tank Service Cost ?

My guy charges 35$ every 3 months. He comes to the house to do it on a schedule. I think that’s very reasonable. My tank is rated for 6 months, but the piece of mind is worth it

    Bumping?

I had to google “calf bumping” I’ve never heard such a thing. Why not just sleeve her? 7-9 months bred it is extremely easy to do. Learning to preg has been the best thing I’ve ever done. I am very confident down to 1.5-2 months bred after doing around 250 head.

I will wait on this one...

I tag several hundred a year, and I can only think of a couple that would let me easily tag their calf. I have a calf pole with a hook. I will drive up beside a fresh one, jump up on the flat bed and drag the calf up on to work it over. Everyone tells me that won’t happen once I get some more...

    Renting a Bull

I lone out a few bulls each year to a couple friends/ neighbors. They are small time guys with just a handful of cows. Works out well for both of us, they get a bull to use, and I don’t have to feed them over the winter. They have closed herds, and 2 of the 3 guys only have cows they bought...

    Testing Bulls

It’s not even a question here. Every bull every year. I will even check some bulls twice a year. One before spring turn out, and one before fall. Not worth the risk for 35$. Pretty much have one or 2 test bad every year. I know guys that leave their bulls out year round, and haven’t had...

We can quit chasing epds now

This has to be some kind of joke? 😅

    Uffda...

I have one this year also. Was putting cidrs in a group 3 weeks ago, thought one sure looked to be bagging. Sure enough, I guessed her at about 7 months along. She had to of bred at 6 months old. I don’t understand how a 600lb calf can stand for a 2100lb bull.

    Dead calf

I have noticed the same thing. I have kept a few over the years that lost their calf. Thinking that they are not milking a calf, so the should breed right back and be good to go next year. Most of the times that did not happen. They were 2-3 months behind where they were the year before...

    Dead calf

I had i similar experience. I no longer buy calves from somewhere else. I didn’t loose 10, but seems like 5 or 6. And doctored a lot more

    Semen test

My vet calls that a “rusty load” I’ll admit the first time I heard that my immaturity got the best of me. After the vet “milked” him a couple times he was fine

    Spring calving vs fall calving

I calve in Jan and early feb for 2 reasons. First is because that’s usually my least busy time on the farm side of things. So I have more time to dedicate to taking care of them. March and April it’s not uncommon for me to work 18-20 hour days. That’s doesn’t leave much time for the cows...

    Resource ve Cowboy Up

I have no experience with cowboy up, and I plan for it to stay that way. On the other hand, I love my resource and renown calves. They are favorites of everyone that see’s them

    Connealy Concord

Registered I assume? Good to hear you liked them. I have thought about using sexed concord on some of my best heifers. I agree, so many options out there it makes it hard to decide.
