    Abort

She didn’t have an udder but was a little swollen back there still so that’s probably what prompted them to do it.

    Abort

Took the heifer and sold her last week. Weighed 880 and brought 1.27 a lb. I was hoping she would bring a little bit more but being a yellow heifer I guess that’s about right. Question I have is they must have preg tested her since they marked her as open on my receipt? Didn’t charge me for a...

Back with the herd this morning. Guess she just needed some time.
  5. Down in Dixie

    Abort

Well I saw her out with the herd this morning before I left. Got back about noon and didn’t notice her but wasn’t to concerned with her because I just bought an old tractor and I was messing with it. Went out to check on her before I came in before dark and couldn’t find her anywhere. Guess I...

    Abort

Looking at my records and she was first bred July of 2022. Haven’t seen her in heat since. With my terrible year for hay it only makes sense to cull the questionable cattle. Sale is going on right now so will probably just wait till next week to take her.

She was in great condition but not overweight. Weighed her a few weeks ago at 950 but she isn’t a real tall cow. I have well 9 bred heifers now and about 25 cows. All but one heifer I retained from my old bull and bred all these to my new bull. So far this is my first early calving issue.

I’m going to give my vet a call and may let him run some blood work on he. Don’t mind sending a calving problem down the road but don’t to have something like lepto causing big trouble down the road for some one else.

Could the stress of drought cause this also? Cows stayed in really good shape but pastures are in rough shape.
  10. Down in Dixie

    Abort

Had a heifer abort. She is 2 years and 9 months old. Saw her showing labor signs 24 hrs before she actually got the fetus out. I had her originally calving 6 months ago but maybe another possible abortion? I plan on taking her to the sale today or tomorrow. Hope it’s just a cow issue and not any...
  11. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

Well she is a little over 5 months old and has grown good. New momma cow has done a good job.
  12. Down in Dixie

    Been blessed with new calf

The Akaushi (red) cattle are much more appealing to the eye than the black cattle not to mention the reds grow out bigger and faster.
  13. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

Momma and calf are still doing good. Only 9 weeks old and growing like a weed. So glad this worked out the way it did.

    Calving 2023

Had one today. Glad she waited for it to warm up. Should have at least two more next week. Only lost one calf this year. Can’t wait to have a year of no losses.
  15. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

Don’t get hardly any bottle calves in the sale barn. Only had two pairs that I saw yesterday out of 2,000 head. No other calves there. May start popping in there more often just to see if I can get myself in trouble.
  16. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

Not sure what I’m going to do with it. I have a full bag and not much in the other. Still have 3/4 bag of the soy based also. Guess I will hold on to it for a little bit and maybe sell it. Not a bad thing to keep on hand. Always got colostrum on hand.
  17. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

Looks like new momma and calf are doing great. Dropped off old momma at the sale barn this morning. Love the milk face.
  18. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

She still wants a bottle but she needs to learn to work that udder. Saw her suck a little when I fed this morning and had a wet face again so she is getting some milk.
  19. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

She had a wet face when I went to feed tonight. Give momma some feed and calf kept coming to me instead of momma. Finally got her in the right direction though.
  20. Down in Dixie

    Calf poop

They have the barn to themselves and old momma has about a 500’ buffer zone so other than some bawling the calf shouldn’t have any distractions from new momma.
