    Drought Observations

I have some bermuda green and standing that should be good for a month or maybe two. I planted some ryegrass in September that is farther along than that broadcast just before the October rains we got here. Time will tell whether it will be enough.

    Drought Observations

Rain missed us yesterday. Well, not exactly. It rained very heavily on us but we were at our daughter's house 35 miles to the east. Looks like everything went Northeast through Ft Worth. Nothing on our pastures out NW of Ft worth, We still have some moisture in the soil from rains a few days...

    Drought Observations

Some observations on my little place here NW of Ft Worth. 1. Drought and cooler temps turned my pasture with Giant Bermuda to straw. Lots of grass but just looks like winter already. 2. Pasture with Cheyenne Bermuda greened up with the recent rains, even this late. Past years show my Cheyenne...

    Got a little rain finally

We got 0.4 inches here at my place in North Texas. It was spotty. Some more some not at all. It won't be enough to bring back my pasture this year. No rain forecasted for the next ten days but temps still to be 100 or more. I am hoping to overseed with winter ryegrass and restock this winter.

Who's fixin to start feeding hay

Feeding hay right now. Not planning to buy any more. They will go to the sale barn.

Key words but what do they mean, how do you do it?

Rant to follow- If you don't want to hear it, just move on. The real basis for all this "feel good" talk is " humans bad" but "nature good". It's like species-wide self flagellation because we have been successful in using our brains and natural resources to improve our quality of life...

    Feeding Hay

Here NW of Ft Worth, people are cutting hay everywhere. More than I have seen in a few years. One guy planted either peas or vetch near a river bottom this summer. He just baled it and made maybe 3 round bales/acre. Cattle are still grazing but it is getting really dry. Rain next week probably...

    Grass burrs/sandspurs

I don't know why but my sandburs were nearly non-existent in my bermuda pasture this year. I did fertilize heavily(600 lbs/acres of 24% Nitrogen). Thinking about Rezilon based on other recommendations but looking for a source selling quantities appropriate for my small acreage.

    Trees vs undergrowth.

One other thought on growing pecans. Be careful what ground you plant them in. It may look good on the surface but pecans have a long tap root. I've seen pecan trees planted where there was rock or caliche three feet down and the trees never did grow. It would be an expensive lesson to buy the...

    Trees vs undergrowth.

I know people who gave done much the same thing n the same scale. The difference is that it was on land that was watered from river water rights in the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico( think Hatch, NM) in Dona Ana County, the largest pecan producing county in the United States. Stahman Farms used...

    Heat mineral

I started using a block with Justifly but switched to Rabon block because they ate the justify block like it was candy. The Rabon block lasts about what I would expect for the proper dosage. It also worked really well. There were still a few flies but just like five to ten on each animal instead...

    Grazing headed out wheat

Is there a possibility of grain overload/acidosis? I let my small grains( wheat , oats, triticale) pasture go to where it headed out. When I turned out my steers into it they went off their feed. I got them back on hay quickly and dosed them with probiotics. I don't know that's what happened...

    No till drilling summer annuals

My first year I had a bad weed problem. I burned it down with glyphosate, disked in and drug the field smooth. I broadcast brown top millet as a cover crop along with bermuda in the spring. The millet looked great but it nearly killed out all the bermuda and I had to replant bermuda the next...

This weed/vine laughs at regular strength glyphosate.

Thank you for the help. I did download the app. Still not sure which type of vetch. Now I know where to leave it alone and where to spray.

This weed/vine laughs at regular strength glyphosate.

Thank you everyone for your input. Yes, it does look like a vetch of some type. I did download the Plantnet app. Very handy. I will definitely leave this alone in my pastures. It will have to go in my garden area. Now that I know what it is, control will be no problem. Thank you again...

This weed/vine laughs at regular strength glyphosate.

Thank you. I've never seen vetch before.

This weed/vine laughs at regular strength glyphosate.

I would appreciate any help identifying this weed/vine that is invading my pasture, garden, chicken yard and my lawn. It really can bog down the brush hog on my little tractor. It doesn't respond to regular strength glyphosate. A recent visitor from the Austin area said it was there, too but...

    Fertilizer is on the ground

I was once an engineer in a an ammonia and nitric acid facility. Ammonium Nitrate and Urea are made from these. The production cost is determined nearly entirely based on natural gas prices. BTW- down here in Texas yesterday I paid 490/ton for 24-6-12.

    Grazing Irrigated Wheat first time

I planted a few acres of Wheat/Triticale/Oats mixture that I picked up in Lubbock last fall and, like @1982vett said, just waited until the plants were rooted well before letting my calves in to graze. Alos like @1982vett says, fillthem up on hay before you turn them out on the fresh grazing so...
