    Cover crop....variety differences

Cereal rye is hard to beat here. I will fly it into soybeans once the leaves start to get some color to them. Flying some into corn this fall also, typically I would still into corn stalks but everything was late this year

    Happy Pictures

I don’t think we have any grass left. 12” of mud every step. Never saw anything like it.

    Summer annual in ky

I’m the the conclusion it’s not possible to put up Sudan dry unless your mower has rubber crimping roles. We have a JD moco with hammers, and even on the most aggressive setting you still can’t hardly get the stems to dry. Always end up wrapping it

    All you can eat....buffet hay

It’s is very simple. If they are wasting more than a reasonable amount the hay is either very low quality and undesirable or you are unrolling too much.

    All you can eat....buffet hay

There will always be doubters. I have right at 225 mommas and I’m feeding 3 5x6 bales a day. I run a lower than average stocking rate, so there is quite a bit of grass left. I have a neighbor with right around 70 cows, and he feeds more hay than I do. This has been the wettest 2 years in...

Kleingrass is poison to horses. Stop planting this stuff.

Sounds like a good reason to plant it to me.

    Oat Hay

I’m only planning on 1 cutting. I assumed they would just be done after getting cut like the oats usually are. I’d love for them to grow back 3-4” that would be awesome weed suppression for the no-till beans following them.

    No wonder we've been dry

We’ve had the wettest year I ever remember. It’s a wonder I’m not bald after 2019. Some farms I planted 4 times. Corn got flooded out twice, so gave up and planted them to beans. They got flooded out the first time. And got about 1/2 stand the second time. Between corn, beans, and wheat I...

    Bin run corn for grazing

160k population would be a plant every 5” in a 7.5” drill spacing. You would have to have extremely good soil, lots And lots of nitrogen, and bunches of timely rains for it to put on any type of ear. you might get a lot of grazing out of the stalks and leaves but I wouldn’t bank on any corn...

    Bin run corn for grazing

If you are planting it at 160,000, you don’t have to worry about ear development. There won’t be any.

    Oat Hay

Here we try to drill them mid feb here.Usually first part of May is when they need to Come off. Can be a very difficult time to get them put up. We have to wrap them every year. Oats loose there feed value very quickly when they start to head. In 5 years, we got them put up right once. I...

    Fair pay

We charged 20$ an acre last fall. 35’ chisel and 600 hp tractor Pulling it 8-10” deep. Some of the rates I see above are nuts. Most of the tillage we do now is custom. I prefer to build my soils, not destroy them.

When to use crop chopper on baler?

I’m guessing he means a precutter. If you feed with a mixer, it will save you an incredible amount of mixing time. My baler doesn’t have one, but the next one Probably will. Several guys around here use them. On long stemmy grasses such as Sudan, or corn it will chop it up into 4-6” pieces...

    Storing Round Bales Outside

Where do you get your tarps? How do you fasten them down? I worry with our kanas winds one may not last very long

    Fescue

Very truthful comment here. The mineral I feed has a 3-4 oz/day consumption, and cost around 32.00 a bag. The mineral a lot of guys around here feed has a 1-1.5 lb/ day consumption. It cost around 21-22$ a bag. It is a very low quality product with just basic minerals The 32.00 mineral...

    Baling Green Hay

I’ve had some get down to 40-45% and it molds and turns nasty. 65% has been the sweet spot for me.

    Baling Green Hay

I would say that is pretty close. I actually like that better. Most all my hay is fed by unrolling. Lots of small herds, 20-30 cows. I will unrole 1 bale of that and they will pick it clean. Then they will go off and pick for the rest of the day. I do things differently if weather is real...

    Baling Green Hay

We bale close to 1000 silage bales a year. Like has been said, baling them wet and wrapping them does not add feed value to them. For us it allows us to get hay put up at the right time for quality. Another positive is there is no waste with balage that is put up right. No flat spot on the...

    Potential Rained on Hay

A rain on hay that has only been cut hours is better than hay that has been cut several days. No rain is good, but everyone knows that. I’m patiently waiting a few day dry spell to get some put up. I am going to wrap it. We can’t seem to go more than 3-4 days without a rain

    grass heading out

I’m spraying escort today. Some of our fescue is 3” tall and starting to head out. Lots of rain in the forecast, so I’m hoping the escort won’t set it back too much
