    shearing off winter hair

Hereford hair usually is really easy to work with if you do things right. We'd clip the dead hair off right around now then when it started to get warmer rinse them down at sunset. Usually would have all kinds of hair to work with and when it comes to fitting cattle the more hair you can work...

    shearing off winter hair

We used to clip off all the dead hair around this time when we showed. Between the cooler weather and rains you'll get a really nice coat of new hair growth back if you just get rid of the dead stuff now. I think we just clipped from top to bottom, it is a time consuming task but had good...

    Show Is Done

I couldn't agree more! I think some of these kids today quit on showing because mom and dad go out and buy them an expensive club calf from the start and they get used to winning all the time and never learn anything. Then the moment they don't win something they throw a fit about it and quit...

    Show Is Done

Sorry to hear about your experiences. I would say they probably did you a favor by not allowing the steer in the sale. From the picture you showed us and the weight he is at he is not finished yet and because of that you may not have got a very good price. Just feed him out and sell him when...

    Less Then A Month

What is the age on both? Not trying to sound critical but sounds like both could use a little more finish than the have right now.

    Less Then A Month

Looking good. What would you guess the steer is weighing? I like his color patter and depth of rib

If you ever need some suggestions on light BW AI bulls I'd be willing to suggest a few Polled bulls we've used AI that have done well on heifers.

    Less Then A Month

Very impressed with the dedication to get this heifer show ready in less than a month. Sounds like things are going well and be sure to share some pictures! Quick question, did you ever consider synchronizing her to breed AI versus turning out with the bull then starting later? Reason I ask...

    Showing Cow/Calf Pair

Yeah we didn't have to push the cow on feed that much either, in fact the best looking pair I took 1 year was a 7 year old cow with a nice early March bull calf. She was in great shape for a 7 year old cow, showed her at 2 shows and 1 judge was completely shocked when I told her how old the cow...

    Showing Cow/Calf Pair

Got this topic idea from a friend's Facebook status. For those of you that have shown over the years do you like showing a cow/calf pair or is it something you don't like/want to do? Growing up dad never liked it when my brother and I wanted to show a former heifer project as a cow/calf...

    Kids and showing

Thanks, those are older pictures too. The last cow is the only one of those still on the farm and that picture is probably 2-3 years old. I posted some photos from this spring here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=91945 We're pretty selective about trying to have a herd of females that have good milk...

    Kids and showing

OK, found some pictures for you cowgirl8... This is the only daughter we got out of her. We got 7 calves from her with average weaning ratio of 110 which is very good. Like I mentioned, she was born in a blizzard so that is why she doesn't have much for ears but she sure was one of our best...

    Kids and showing

Thanks, she was a very good looking heifer. Wish we could have got more progeny out of her, one of the breeders at our state fair that year really wanted to buy her and wish I had at least asked what he would have paid me but at the time lot of sentimental value because she was my grandpa's...

    Show day today

Congrats, gotta love when you win with calves you raised yourself and didn't have to go out and spend big money on a fancy show calf. Anyone can go out and buy a competitive show animal but takes some extra work to raise one then feels great when you know you are doing it right.

    Kids and showing

Showing used to be our family "vacation" growing up. We'd show at our state junior breed show, county fair, breed junior national, and state fair 4-H and open shows and if we had a good heifer we'd show at Ak-Sar-Ben and once at the Kansas City Royal and occasionally another show in the state...

    Heifer won't eat.. HELP

Is she getting any kind of forage and loading up on that possibly? You may need to put some mineral supplement out to help her appetite, check with your vet or local extension office and they could probably recommend something. You can also try to sweeten up the feed possibly, we used to buy...

    Show stall decorations

Our county fair and breed shows called it the herdsmanship award. Basically if this is a bunch of 4-H kids or a breed's youth association where the judging is going to be done as a group and not per ranch/family what you want to go for is keeping the stalls and surrounding areas neat and clean...

    New to showing help!

Best advice I can give to people new to showing cattle is that there is no such thing as spending too much time with your animals. The earlier you can start working with them the better and don't try to force it on them all at once in a short time period. You will know what they are...

    Help please!

Lots of good advice in this thread. I do agree when someone mentioned a lot going on too soon. Just take it 1 step at a time and give him some company. Ease into each step and if he gets wound up then ease back and try again later. Best thing with show cattle is just spend time with them and...

    This year's Project...Opinions?

What is the breeding on her? Some good hair going on and good muscle and length so she should fill out nice on feed. One thing I don't like about her is she is a little too fleshy in the front for my likes. I'm guessing the cow she is out of is a former project too so always great when you...
