    baby calf covered in maggots

We had fly strike once on a summer black calf. It was bad, I swear the maggots were crawling in and out of his ribs. We bathed him in ivemectin, sprayed antibiotic on the wounds, sprayed liquid bandage on the wounds. Thought he was gone but in a day the maggots seemed to be falling off him...

    American Aberdeen Angus

My experience matches what most of these threads say. It all depends on your market. We only have 20 to 30 head at any given time. We have mini hereford and lowline. We started out for 4H projects. We will likely never win grand champion overall but the size is great for younger kids starting...

    3pt chipper

We had a liberty 3 pt chipper. Was rated for 6inch. Would easily take 3 and 4 inch and would just chop them up. We got lots of mulch out of it and didn't have any issues with tractor. The issue with the chipper is if you have lots of side branches. They don't feed well and it's alot of work...

Recommendations on buying new no-till drill

I agree with staying less than 6'. We pull a 7' esch no till with a Massey 4707 and I think a smaller tractor would struggle. Not because of hp but because of weight.

    Butchering a bull

We butchered a bull into burger and it was fine. No real difference that I could tell but I wouldn't of tried steaks. That being said he was a calm bull and cows were bred with none in heat. I wonder if it would of been bad if he was actively breeding. Similar to how a stressed animal can...

    Ford 3.5L Ecoboost

Best engine I've owned for performance, especially paired with the 10 speed. That being said I also had cam phaser issues. Dealer told me they see it alot for people that tow heavy and work the truck. He said 10k mile oil change in the book is only for people that highway drive. If I change...

    LGD Discussion

What characteristics do you like about kuvasz? We have only had Maremma and they've done a great job but are sometimes hard to find. Interested in learning as ours are getting older in age and we may need replacements some day.

    LGD Discussion

We have 2 maremma LGDs. Haven't had an issue yet, we don't have wolves near us buy coyotes and foxes stay away. We'll find dead coon and possum in the pastures. They've done a good enough job we put our beehives inside the pasture so they can keep bears away. So far so good.

    Birthweight

Interesting. I've noticed our Summer calves always seem smaller. It seemed odd as they have pretty good grass to eat vs hay for the winter/early spring calving cows. I assumed it would be heat or something but maybe it has something to do with the first 80 days.

    Starting South Polls

We used to band older calves as my Pap would wait till they were all born and then have us do it. It worked out fine but was much harder. I now try to grab them day 1. Easier to catch, hold, band, and likely easier on them.

Some days you just need a bit of luck

Luck is what you need. We had a year old heifer that wouldn't even stand up last winter. She had a broken leg and was down over the hill by the fence. We drug her up the hill into the grass. Was gonna end it therebut figured I'd feed and water her for a day or two to see what happens as she...

    Summer calves

We calve in Summer. Never really had an issue until 2 years ago. A few week old calf seemed real lazy. After a day or so I checked him out and thousands of maggots all over him going in and out of his skin. Thought he was a gonner but dumped on Ivermectin and he pulled through. Only time we...

    Rafter JH Miniature Herefords

Welcome. We were a mini hereford breeder in PA. More like mid sized now. Still like the smaller frame for 4H projects and freezer beef. 1000lb steer seems to be our sweet spot.

    Massey Ferguson 4707

We have owned one for 2 years now. Great utility tractor. Underpowered for road travel with hills but never ran out of power in fields. Pulls 9ft discbine 6mph. Can't go faster or it's too bouncy. Pulls 4 bottom plow fine, great traction for mud.
