    14-5-38 fertilizer

I have access to just over 1,000 lbs of free 14-5-38 fertilizer and was wondering what your thoughts were about applying it to one of our small 5 acre hay fields?

I have a Parmark Solar Pak 12 that will only work when the sun is shining. Do I have a battery problem or a charger problem? The batteries are 3 years old.

    Expanding the herd

Good morning, we are planning to expand the herd with financial help from my parents as investors. What would be a fair method to pay them back in regards to percentages of the calf crop over what period of time? Also how does the salvage value of the cow come in to play? Thanks

    Breeding black and red Hereford

With a heterozygous black bull and red cows, will all of the offspring be red? What about a homozygous black bull with red cows, will all of those calves be black? Then I assume breeding a homozygous black bull to the offspring of a homozygous black/red cow? Will that be an assortment of black...

    Cut now or wait

We have a field that is 95% fescue that has not been able to dry out up until now and therefore has not been cut and baled all season. Would we be better off to cut now and hopefully again at the end of the season or wait until the end of the season and do it then? Thanks

    Abcess or hernia??

I have a cow that has been grazing in a remote pasture with a softball sized growth on her right side just past her last rib approximately 1/3 of the way up her side. Would that be too high for a hernia or would it be something else? I tried to take a picture but isn't as easily noticed on...

    Frosted crabgrass

I was able to buy extra hay this fall and chose to graze my hayfield instead if baling it. I have an abundance of crabgrass out there but we are expecting 31 degrees tonight. Is there any reason to pull the cattle off of the frosted crabgrass and what will the feed value be of it post-frost...

    Drum mowers

Does anyone run drum mowers on smaller HP tractors? I have a 35hp New Holland and have researched some of the available options and am contemplating purchasing one along with a rake. I would only be cutting 5 acres at my house and then another 8 acres at my business. I have been using a local...

    Solar fence chargers

Good morning, what do you consider the best solar fence charger for less than $350? We have a few different smaller solar chargers on connected small pastures and I am considering going to one larger one to cover all of them together. These are 4 strand barbed wire fences with 2 strands of...

Angus over Hereford or Hereford over Angus?

What do most people run to get Black Baldies, Angus Bull/Hereford cows or vice versa? Our Hereford cow/Angus Bull crosses these past few years have yielded the highest weaning weights and highest price per pound even more so than straight Black Angus calves. After seeing an additional net of...

    Weaning flaps

We installed the yellow Quiet Wean brand flaps in our calves noses Friday evening and kept the calves with the cows. My sons return to school tomorrow so I was thinking of removing them this evening and separating the calves into the corral but keeping the cows just outside for a day or two...

Aside from getting a larger tractor are there any worthwhile options for haying equipment for a 30 horse engine/25 horse pto tractor? Thanks again

Which breeding matchup has the greatest potential for problems.....father bred to daughter or son bred to mother?

    Heifer/bull twins

The Angus cow that most closely reflects what I want the rest of my herd to look/perform like had heifer/bull twins this evening. The sire to them is an Imagemaker son that was retired to the sale barn at 8 years old last year after breeding season. The balance of the bull calves this season...

    Red baldie

We had a Herford cow bred to a black angus bull deliver a "red baldie" instead of the expected black baldie. In years past the same cow/bull combo has always produced black baldies. How often does the expected blackie baldie outcome produce a red baldie? Granted I haven't seen it in the sunlight...

    Thawing a frozen quatered deer

My son got a deer with his bow Saturday night and we found it Sunday morning. Due to the location in which we found it we had to quarter it in order to carry it out. We hung the quarters in an opened sided shed and thanks to high temperatures in the upper teens the quarters are now frozen. It is...

    British White X Hereford

Our herd is primarily Angus with a couple Hereford and one British white cow in the mix. We have always used angus bulls but was thinking of picking up a nice-looking Hereford bull. I was curious what you guys thought a Hereford X British White calf would look like. The calves from the British...

    Off cow

We have a 7 year old Angus that isn't eating much, has lost some condition the past two days and is restless (will sit down then back up 10 minutes later) so we penned her up in the barn pasture last night. As the boys were walking her to the barn at dusk is was almost as if she couldn't see...

    Corral boards

We are preparing to build our first set of proper working pens for sorting and holding back weaning calves. For aesthetics I would like to have the boards attached on the outside of the posts but am wondering for strength if it would be better to have the boards on the inside of the posts? If I...
