    Bull testing

Yes. They have a pretty small herd. He breeds the cows so they'll start calving in January, then moves his bull to the heifers. I check at least once a day after I turn out the bulls and note which cows they're either breeding or glued to their side (not in standing heat yet). Dates and...

    Bull testing

Dick was only 5 and I loved that bull. But another reason he was the last one we purchased from that breeder.

    Bull testing

Just good management! We test every year, but a lot of people around here don't. And end up with open cows. Neighbor to the north didn't test 2 years ago and not a single cow was bred. See, that's what can happen if you don't provide bedding during an epic freeze. One of my fave bulls still...

    Oh, the drama!

I finally did with Bart. Ummm, where's his junk? Clyde was as simple as why is he peeing out the back? All of 2 hours after I tagged her. I have no legit defense.

    Oh, the drama!

Heifer calves on the left, bull calves on the right. The exception is when I eff up and mistake a heifer for a bull (first calver, Bart, and calf this year, Clyde). Always when it's -20 and no way am I taking off my gloves to cop a feel. It happens.

    Oh, the drama!

I waited a week to tag them because I thought they would bend their ears. They'll grow into them.:ROFLMAO:

    Oh, the drama!

Even Fizzy is getting in on the action. But back to Seltzer primarily a bottle calf and Tonic nursing almost exclusively.

    Oh, the drama!

Getting VERY optimistic! Seltzer refused the bottle yesterday afternoon and evening, didn't look sunken in. Tonic refused a bottle yesterday afternoon but sucked one down in the evening - and then immediately latched onto Fizzy. Seltzer took maybe a pint this morning, both refused this...

    Oh, the drama!

Thanks! And Mr TC officially started using a walker today. Only for a couple hours but progress.

    Day 7

Guess what she did yesterday morning? A heifer this time (had to name her Rachel :ROFLMAO:). This one is a Willy baby. I turned the bulls out earlier this week and if she breeds back quickly like last year, she'll move up another 1-2 months. Well done, Phoebe!

    Oh, the drama!

So, one of my late calvers came up missing last Saturday and I searched morning, noon & night. But this would be her 3rd calf, she knows the drill. Sure enough, found her Sunday morning with the herd and a TINY heifer. My first thought was twins, and the other didn't make it. My 2nd thought...

    My girls

Mountain lions? They're around here so I suspect you have them as well. They'll either bury their kill or hide it in a tree. Seriously, look up. Game Warden & DNR told that to a guy that lives about 10 miles south of us because he was losing calves, and he did find one in a tree.

    Aborting Calves

Lepto or neospora would be my guess. And unfortunately, there isn't a vaccine for neospora.

    Upside Down Calf

    Good save!

    Uterine Prolapse pics

On the topic of coating the prolapse with sugar, I took Mr TC for a follow up visit with his primary care physician and his Dr was scrolling through the pics of Mr TC's surgery/new hardware on my phone when he saw the pics of the cows prolapse. He said he uses sugar on prolapses in women...

    One or Two?

You may want to try the Madigan Squeeze for the possible "dummy calf" syndrome and contracted tendons usually straighten out in a few days but there's always the option of splints to help in more severe cases. Link below to the Madigan Squeeze and there are tons of videos online. Hello...

    One or Two?

Good save with the pull! I'd hate to be the cow that tried to spit out 130 lbs. without assistance. Please keep us updated with his weaning weight!

older cow with bad bag..but new heifer calf...what are the odds of her passing bad bag to new calf?

Yup. But I'll chime in with my 2 cents. Three-year-old cow had her 2nd calf this morning, a beautiful, big heifer. And the calf can't nurse her enormous bottle teats. Gave the calf a bottle of colostrum replacer, just to be sure, and got her latched on. Which lasted all of 30 seconds before...

    Mostly Heifer calves

Dangit, another heifer calf today. Up to 19 heifers, 12 steers. I culled hard last year so only calving out 43, which is the smallest amount in probably 14 years.
