It depends from myostatin mutation. There are 9 variations. Three of them, as you said, means that calf is born plain, but develops muscles quickly after birth. Some breeds can have a couple different mutations, so it's better to know which kinds are in each animal. The same animal can have one...

I would agree on that. He might have no myostatin mutation, so not double muscled. At least his sire isn't a carrier to my knowledge. We had a lim bull, which had at least one copy of myostatin, but he was a completely different type of animal. Blondes as a breed aren't double muscled. They do...

Hopefully a herdbull for the next year. Getting some tips from his mom how he needs to aproach a woman, it seems today. 5 months old.

    Patch had her calf

Done a close breeding twice. Only because that used our own bulls, while there were their dams and granddams in the herd. Son on a dam produced a calf with lower growth rate. No other faults, just both times both calves were slower growing. Calves from granddams were just like all other calves.

    Belgian blue cattle

Might give her one more year to raise one more calf next year. She is good natured cow, so even if calf needs some help to nurse at first she is cooperative enough. A possibility to get one more heifer is really tempting 😅 so far only two from the past two years.

    Belgian blue cattle

Waiting for this girl to calve soon. Due on the 19th, will be 75% blue calf, the third calf for her. Her dam currently is 13 years old and raising her last calf- blue sired.

Having a bit of blue in a female helps most of the time to get more muscles on the calf. As I say a quick muscle injection. Good lim also works well for that purpose.

    Calving 2024

50% lim, 12,5% angus, 9% charolais, 12,5% belgian blue in this girl. Angus just for the darker colour. 7 years old I believe.

And to be fair black coloured weanlings aren't desired here. If there are only a couple in a group that's fine, but it's hard to get a better price for mostly black group

Not yet. Trying to wait until three weeks mark. It should be good enough to take the cast off for good. Don't want to make things worse accidently.

    Calving 2024

Hit two weeks mark of age and being in the cast. So far things are looking okay. Have four cows in heat today... One for AI this evening and three for tomorrow morning. This one's dam is in heat. Will go with piedmontese again! This one's dam will be AI'ed in the evening. Probably will use...

Two of oldest heifers. Both almost 5 months old. The first one is sired by charolais, out of limx cow, second is sired by lim out of limxangusx cow. The calf with a broken leg is doing well so far. Hopefully she will make a full recovery.

    New generation

Got a better shot of the heifer. She is around 80% charolais. I guess her greatgranddam being herefordx played a role in her having some white markings instead of being white 🤔
