    How to maintain grass

I just got my first two calves (ever) on June 1st. They are doing great and I am learning so much as a new (hobby) cattle farmer. My question is in regards to the grass in the lot they are in. I see that they are eating the grass well. But they leave certain parts of it alone. And it's...

    Fencing full of Brush, etc.

I have about 6 acres that I need to put some cows on. I just have a small hobby farm in Kentucky. Most of the lot has barb wire. Not the best in some places. But it other places, pretty good. No hot wires anywhere on it. I plan to fix the bad spots and leave the rest. In a perfect world...

    Fence Rows

My Dad and I bought a farm last fall and I've been cleaning out fence rows and putting up new fence in my upper lot. Meanwhile, all the fence rows in my lower lot (approx. 6 acres) are growing like crazy. Keep in mind, the previous owner NEVER cleaned out the fence rows so they were already...

    Seeding my Pasture

My Dad mentioned spreading the seed (broadcasting) and then going over the pasture with a disc. Is that a feasible option? Or not a good idea? Won't the disc completely tear up all the ground? Or is that a plow that I'm thinking of? Thank you.

    Seeding my Pasture

Thank you for the good info, Dun. I almost forgot about the Clover. One question: You said to lime before I seed. Does that mean like a week before, or a month before?

    Seeding my Pasture

Thank you in advance. I live in Kentucky. This year will be my first time having cattle. I am going to buy two calves and raise them up and sell them this fall. They will be in my side lot. I said all that to say this: I have an 8 acre pasture that will NOT be used this year. I have to...

    First Tractor Questions

Thank you everyone for your input. This is very helpful information. Boondocks - sorry, I replied on Monday, but apparently it didn't post my reply. I saw your post. Thank you for the safety concern. You are absolutely right about that. A roll-over is something I think about. It's not...

    First Tractor Questions

Thanks guys. Bigfoot. That leads me to another question. It was my understanding that I should purchase a round bale hay-feeder to keep the cows from tromping all over the hay. How do I feed square bales? Just throw it out into the field?

    First Tractor Questions

Thank you for all the input. I'm glad to hear that we purchased a good tractor. A couple of guys at work have told me similar things. I do expect to be moving round hay bales. Not this year, but starting next year, I will have to feed my cattle through the winter. I have a small lot next...

    First Tractor Questions

Good morning. My Dad and I own a small hobby farm (8 acres). Just getting started this year. No experience farming. Having a blast so far. Our plan is to start with a couple cows this year (beef) and then keep growing. Anyways, this week, we purchased our first tractor. A 35 Massey...

    New Small Cattle Farm

Well I have a couple things to share: 1. I did some fencing this weekend. I really had a lot of fun. It felt good to get out and do some physical work. I'm usually at a desk. It was my first time cleaning out a fence row. I got one side of my small lot cleared out (probably 30 or 40 yards...

TennesseeTuxedo -I'm not familiar with photobucket. I'll google it. Rafter S -I really like the way you put that. That's exactly what I'm thinking.

    New Small Cattle Farm

Hey all. I hope everyone has been doing well. It's been a while since I posted. I wanted to say thanks again for everyone's help. It's getting closer to spring, so I'm really starting to get things in order for buying some cows. I've decided to get a couple acres of my land prepared for...

    New Small Cattle Farm

Thank you for the info! Kell-inKY - I completely agree with you. I didn't realize grass-only was an option. Can I really do that? If I could put them on grass-only, that would be great! And I will do that. I'll see how they do with the barb wire fence. There are no cattle beside my...
