    Birth Defects this year

With calving season wrapping up for most, it was a fairly interesting season. Learned some new things. Found more than a dozen new specimens and read a very interesting paper on Fumonisins (A mycotoxin that often contaminates Corn) and its relation to Neural tube defects (anencephaly, spina...

For you PNW folks and others, the weather

Dry, Warm, Beautiful Calving weather but one of the neighbors set a grass fire last week by accident. NOT a good sign at all. We got a little more snow than last winter, but not enough. Not even enough to knock the dead grass down. We should be crispy and Black by the end of May.

    Birth Defects this year

We are targeting common mammalian livestock. Mainly Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Pigs and Rabbits. Although right now our collection holds more Calves than any other species. We have just begun reaching out to small and large scale pig breeders and have been networking with more and more goat and...

    Birth Defects this year

Lucky_P, We are not in any way identifying the cause of these deformities. Simply because in many cases this is unknown. As I am not a Vet myself, I am using my research to help the Farmer/Rancher/Breeder Identify the deformity, so they can take that info and hopefully work it back to some...

    Birth Defects this year

Interesting Lucky_P. I have not really delved in to the internal defects much but have always wondered about how common they were. For the purposes of the book I have stuck with external/easily visible defects as the average farmer would probably not go into a necropsy that detailed without...

Pregnant Cow found stuck laying uphill

If she was mine I would be Bumping her ribs (with your knees) trying to get her up now. She needs to move and take pressure off her organs and help get them all back where they belong after getting rolled.

I will also say that all of our published specimens will be limited to City or County and State of origin, no farm names will be used.

    Birth Defects this year

Most people understand that accidents happen. This includes human babies. Most birth defects are found universally in all mammals. And from my experience, small farms are just as likely to have something odd than the large ones. But I do understand your thinking Bez. And I find that...

    Birth Defects this year

So far the topic has been very well received and we already have a waiting list. Most people are exceedingly curious about defects. We also have a huge following from non-livestock people who are interested in these oddities.

    Birth Defects this year

Nope. I am working on a book describing common and uncommon birth defects in livestock (cattle, Goats, Sheep, Rabbits and Pigs) written as a laymans guide to get the average farmer with no veterinary background on the right track for figureing out the cause of the defect. We buy whole frozen...

    Birth Defects this year

Yep... We are actually north of Hanford and Downwind from Fukishema. Though unlikely that either is the cause of these.

    Birth Defects this year

Well my search for Abnormal livestock births has been extremely successful this year... Wondering if any of the vets on here have seen similar things... Just from our county alone I have had a Hydrocephalus calf, A Calf with 6 legs (two extra fronts) and a Schistosoma Reflexus calf. From out of...

Working on a Book.. and looking for help.

I know I hope never to have oddities again, but they do happen. What is amazing is about half of the oddities I buy the farmer/rancher was not aware that the stillborn had an anomaly. So pay attention to those dead things... Swipe the inside of the mouth to check for clefts, check the feet...
