What kind of hinge is best for a double wooden gate having two eight foot gates that latch together in the middle?

wc,

Have about 8 of those designs.... hard wood...heavy.....each gate 10'....you need to sink a metal pipe...1 1/2 to 2 inches..in the ground 3'...even with the ground...depending on useage...at the joining point with a drop rod on one to stabilize the gates. Maybe a slide rod lock at the top if feasable...Get the heavy duty metal hinges for the outside ends.....if there are animals around...you will need them.

Preston, I'm doing the same thing but with 2- 14 foot bull gates. The gates are hung from 4" metal post 3 feet concreted in the ground. They meet in the center with a latch and removeable post. The removeable post is in another pipe buried in concrete like your talking about. I put it in a valve box so I could cover it while the post is removed and not get dirt in it.
