Winter storm

Help Support CattleToday:

Just a Monday here. 14" of snow overnight, temp at 0°, windchill at -20°, and calling for another foot of snow by tomorrow.

Mail got delivered, no run on groceries, restaurants open. Haha
I'm glad that forecast is not for here.
How long does the winter last there?
I reckon we'd have to start going to the post office to get our mail if we got those kind of snows much.
if they forecast an inch of snow here good luck finding milk and bread.
I saw yesterday a news article saying that local hardware stores had sold out of snow shovels and other related items.

I was in TSC last Fri to pick up an online order ship to store that came in and some lady came in looking for some salt/ice melt... they were out and store person said that Walmart and most everyone was out that she had heard of... That ice over the snow hit everyone. Then we have had a few slight melting and the iced top snow is really rough.

Plan on winter starting in mid October and ending in May. Anything other than that is a bonus.
My hats off to ya on that. Usually first frost here is 2nd to 3rd week in October and last frost potential till about May 10.
Usually after February things start to warm up although March can still have some cold disagreeable weather.

Why a run on snow shovels? Don't people keep them year to year?

I've had the same snow shovels for probably 7 years now. We don't run out and buy new ones every season....

We had an ice storm in Arkansas once that really messed with people. A guy I knew borrowed a Jeep Wagoneer to go to town and when he brought it back to return it, he parked close to the house. The drive, and the Jeep, were on a tilt toward the lake almost half a mile away. When he got out of the Jeep he slammed the door closed and the Jeep started to slide sideways... and it ended up in the lake.
People were having a time keeping their cattle fed because the cows were sliding into the hollows and couldn't get out. I had a bull that was stuck in one place for three days because if he moved he would slip, and he didn't want to come down off a six inch rise in the pasture.

Some people probably don't understand that all tools have a breaking point, so they buy shovels more often than you. I think my shovel is at least as old as yours...

O for sure they do break and I've broken many. But I suspect after this winter many people "down south" will toss their new shovels in the trash and forget all about snow until it arrives again another year when they will rush to the store to buy them out of shovels once again.

That's what I would think too, It's not something that most folks would throw away. My guess is that it's more to do with a number of folks that rent and move around and new people moving to into the area.

So different here.
We had a little snow Sunday January 5th, enough on the main highway to use salt on the bridges but not enough to.plow. The next snow was 3" or so on Friday, January 10th. I have worked 8 nights, 12 hours a night since the 5th and a few back roads are still slick. The whole world here would shut down if we got 14". I am prepared but most aren't. I get off work at 7am, go to the barn to feed bulls, a beef and make sure water is not froze. Usually in bed by 8:30 am. Tonight will be my first night off since the 5th.

I'm guessing there's also a big difference in road conditions and drivers expectations.

This is today's driving. We would call this clear driving as the visibility is pretty good and you can cruise right along at 55mph. Unless it warms up and stops snowing this maybe as good as our highways get for a week or two. Probably not the same thing many of you would classify these conditions as.

Here that would be schools closed, stay off the roads warnings... all that crap. I grew up, up north, and took my driving test in 3 inches of snow and more coming down... Your roads would have been common up there when I was a kid, and meant slowing down a bit... and we had more 2wd vehicles than not.
Too many not willing to put chains on tires for road conditions like that so the busses don't run. Too many lawsuits.... they want clear clean roads here, flying like normal, their 4wdrives so they can show off in general if it is a little bit of snow. I get around in my forester and outback 90% of the time til it gets too deep.
We use the 4wd more due to the mud and crappy conditions than for actual snow... getting in through gates to put hay out in snowy fields...

Our hills and curves are maintained the same as the flats and look the same I just didn't drive on any today.

Chains and studs aren't legal UP here so it's just rubber on the road.

As said that picture I posted is good winter driving conditions. I cruised home from town at 58mph and got passed. If conditions stay like that things won't miss a beat here.
