The main thing I don't like about Armadillo's, is hunting, you have to watch where you walk, because they'll cover the entrance to their hole with leaves and if you miss the slight depression in the ground you will step in a hole up to your knee. I really messed up my knee a few years ago walking down hill through brush stepped in an armadillo hole and bent my knee backwards... Opossum's I can't think of a single positive thing to say about them.... To me they're overgrown disease ridden rats, that will keep your chicken house cleaned out of eggs. And if they get into the feed not only do they Make a Mess they also poop in it .
It's like we are talking about totally different species. The last one I had for a week and she was the cleanest animal I have ever had. And so sweet. When I took her to the rehabber, they flipped her over, got up all in her mouth, and splayed her legs apart. She just took it all so calmly. I'm over here wishing one would need to be my pet and I haven't seen a single one since I moved to the country! I'll watch out for the Dillo holes!

While there have been rare documented cases of opossums that were positive for Rabies, it is exceedingly rare. Their body temperature is lower than that of mammals, and is evidently not particularly conducive to replication of the Rabies virus. I did Rabies fluorescent antibody testing for the western half of KY for 25 years and never found a Rabid opossum. A horse, several cows, one puppy, and myriad bats and skunks, but no rabid opossums (or raccoons, either... the raccoon rabies virus variant is not (yet) present in KY... the Appalachian mountain range has served as a pretty good barrier so far.

As to the myth of opossums being big tick eaters... debunked here:
