Why were the exotic/continental breeds such as Maines, Limo's, Simmy's etc.(Charolais was here before that) brought to N.America in the late 60's?

According to a lot of the posts here people have been adding Angus blood to those breeds to improve this or that trait, but why did the continental breeds come across the pond in the first place?

They were the answer to all the beef questions at the time! Bigger cuts, more milk in the cows, leaner beef, etc. Like all other "answers to everything" they missed the mark.

Angus,Shorthorns & Herefords in the 40's 50's & early sixties were bred down in size because what was called the baby beef market.Then in the late 60's the search was on for larger framed cattle. Angus breeders found bigger framed cattle in Canada and in the northern plains area of the U.S.,The Hereford breeders discoverd the line-one herd at Miles City Montana,Milking Shorthorns were used to increase the size of Beef Shorthorns, And the continental breeds were imported from Europe.
