You could assume(I know that's a bad thing to do) that because the question, "Here's the question: Who owns the fish? ", that someone in this group does in fact own the fish. Otherwise, it could be said, "does anyone own the fish". The fish may have not been mentioned more as this would/could give it away. You coul also assume that since each of the 5 people have a pet, and only 4 type of pets are mentioned besides the fish, then the logical choice would be the fish as the 5th pet, as opposed to hundreds of unamed pets.
