Tornados don't happen as often as the news sometimes makes it seem. I lived for over 10 years about 110 miles south of where those pictures were taken, and only saw a few in all that time, and only then because we lived on a bluff and could see out into the next county. At least out there, if it's daylight, and if they aren't rain encased, you can see them coming.
Here, they are on you before they clear the nearest treeline.
Tornadoes can happen anywhere. A few years ago, there was one up in Massachusetts--seen lots of them over water in Gulf of Mexico.
