I am wondering which is better. Creep feeding calves or supplementing momma. I know many of you feed your cattle rocks and thorn bushes and they raise a huge calf every year. I was just wondering if feeding the momma gives her a little extra or does creep feeding the calf help take some of the strain off the momma cow.this is not a $ issue but which makes more sense.

Well, I wish my cattle would eat rocks - I have enough of them - but unfortunately they do not.

If it is not a dollar issue, I would do neither. Instead I would beef up the pasture and throw some mineral at them.

I have found that my cattle don't respond well to me throwing things at them. ;-)

I early wean my calves. I then background them for 60 days and sell. Calves usually weigh in the 5-600 lb range.

From personal experience I would have to side with Bez on this one. I never felt any reason for extra work with a creep feeder when all I have to do is to put the cow and calf out on a good pasture with a bit of extra nutrition on the side.
