Which Angus bull?

Looking for suggestions about which Angus bull to breed a B/R New Design 036 Angus heifer to. Her maternal line is: Traveler 71, Oscar 711 and Pine Drive. She's only a May '98 calf, but is a moderate framed, thick but feminine heifer. We've been using 036 on our first calf heifers, and don't have another calving ease bull in our tank. Her EPDs are BW 1.2, WW 32, Milk 19 and YW 60. Carcass EPDs are OK, positive weight, marbling, and ribeye, 0 backfat and positive scrotal. Thanks....

There are quite a few very nice "heifer bulls" on the market without having to sacrifice growth and performance. If you wish to stick with ABS sires, you may want to consider Whitestone Fly Traveler 3006. He's a Hi Flyer son out of a pathfinder daughter from 3173. We are located in MO and plan to use him on some of our heifers this spring. We have seen some of his calves and they look very nice. His only downfall is his minus marbling, but New Design should compensate for this. SAF Easy Fortune (Fortune 2000 son) is also distrubuted by ABS and looks good for both calving ease and carcass. We also plan to use SAF Fame (Fortune 2000 son) on some of our heifers. The calves we have seen out of him have been nice and thick. A SAF Fame son, SAF Focus, is also a heifer bull and also looks promising. Our first Hoff Heartland SC456 calf was born last month. He is another Hi Flyer son, has positive carcass, but slightly minus scrotal. On our low milk heifers we are going to use SAF Neutron. You can hardly beat his EPD's for a heifer bull. His calves have also been dynamite. His downfall is he is dead, so his semen as of 2-1, was $75/straw. Hope these suggestions help. There are lots of really nice bulls out there. For us, these bulls accented our program well for growth, carcass, height, and scrotal. Everyone's herd is different, hopefully one or some of these bulls will not only suit your heifer, but other females as well.
Good Luck. Jennifer
Thanks, Jennifer. We bought an Oscar 711 heifer a couple of years ago nursing a Fly Traveler bull calf. He grew out well, gained OK on test. We're seriously considering him. It doesn't have to be an ABS bull, though. As you say, you don't have to give up growth to get an easy calving bull. We're not going to use Fame because of his backfat EPD. We've seen several nice calves out of him, but we try to use bulls with negative backfat EPDs. We've got three nice yearling heifers by TC Stockman 365., but obviously he's not a calving ease bull. Our first bull by him got sick and had to come home from test, but the heifers are nice.

: There are quite a few very nice "heifer bulls" on the market without having to sacrifice growth and performance. It is always interesting looking back to see what people thought was great a decade ago.... New Design 036 (DOB 1990) and still available today -- we have some really nice 036 heifers too and some really nice New Design 1407 (DOB 1997; an 036 Son) heifers as well.

I like F A R Krugerrand 410H really well. He's from Genex. He's not super fancy, but he is good (from my experience) for heifers, and produces nice offspring. I bred one of my show heifers to him a few years back and got an excellent heifer calf.
