I am interested to know where you all think the cattle market is heading over the next 6 months. I have some 4-5 weight calves. I

Pharmer - GREAT question. Unfortunately my crystal ball is rather cloudy at the moment, and my Eight ball says "ask again later" so I can't help.

I do know that around here comparing this year to last year, things are not going very well.

500 lb steer, best price in -
April, 2007 was $134.50
April, 2008 so far it's $115.00
- and that translates to almost $100.00 difference.

In our area, 500 lb steers are down about $25 per cwt from the same week last year, averaging 3 sale barns in the East Texas area. My crystal ball says we don't catch back up for a long time, but that's JMO.

Down here as well, most likely will go lower when I have a trailer load to haul to Crockett.

Since corn and soybeans are through the roof there isn't likely to be a per lb premium for the lighter calves, it MIGHT pay to put more weight on the calves this year. If they are 4 wt now I would hold to July when they are all six weight. Price seasonally starts to nose dive after August, but usually is ~flat from April to then; but it is YOUR money we are gambling with.

SkyLine, any chance is Emory livestock one of the sale barns you are talking about? If so just curious, is there much difference in prices for calves ( 7 weights) between the Tuesday sale and Sat sale?
Got some 7 weights I am thinking about hauling to sale.

It's an average of Athens, Crockett, and Sulphur Springs. Data that is being recorded and published by Dr. Jason Banta from TAMU. He's got about 2 years worth of weekly data in a graph and table. My county extension agent emails it to me once a week. Your agent could probably do the same. I haven't been able to find it on the internet anywhere.

Short term market for feeders does not look good. With the price of feed and the worry about another dry Summer buyers are reluctant to compete for calves of any weight. With 8% fewer corn acres don't look for a strong feeder market going into last quarter. Looks like a stronger export market coming and less competition from other meats, a couple brighter notes.

Ok for some reason it didn't print the full address.

Go to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and over in the Search AMS area on the left type in Texas Slaughter Cattle Auctions.

Hope this helps.

The information that Skyline is talking about is published by Dr. Jason Banta, Livestock specialist with the Extension Service. If you are in Northeast Texas, you can get the information from your County Agent.

As to the question on whether Tuesday and Saturday are the same at Emory, Tuesday's sale is better.

with the feedlots an stocker feeders holding off buying calves.they can only go without calves so long.then they have to start buying.thus pushing the calf market back up where it should be.

Let's hope - As Rally's says, "YOU GOTTA EAT!"

I wished I new for sure!!!!!! One thing is for sure it will change some, hopefuly for the GOOD
Iam not sure of your sitution on these 4-5 wt. eg.( not weaned, weaned, purchased calves etc.)
Here is my opinion and with $.50 you still couldn't get cup of coffee or coke.
The is a breaking point for your operation and mine and everyone elses for that matter.
You need to find that point, use todays market price and see if you can make some $$$$$ now or with heavier cattle.
I would see if your area offers any PRE COND or VAC sales. I use my local PC and Vac sales and Iam very happy with the results, compared to the local auction barn. This method is not for everyone, you must be set up to wean, feed and handle this option.
Alot of the local people around me think Iam crazy for doing this. The sale is 100 miles away gate to gate
They say its to much work and time consuming, thats there opinion.
I liked my check alot more than they liked theirs.
I have sold cattle one day part, some at local barn and some at PC and Vac sale, and after all is accounted for, ( working, feed, meds, diesel for hauling to sale barn 100 miles one way) .
I will not sale at the local barn again, unless other sale disappears for some reason.
Good Luck, hope this helped

Like everybody has been saying the market wants heavier calves.

Compared to last week, steers under 700 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, over 700 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, Holsteins under 350 lbs steady, 350 to 500 lbs 4.00 to 10.00 higher, over 500 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, heifers steady. A noticeably higher percentage of bulls in the mix. Warmer temperatures and dryer weather brought out several more farmer buyers. Lower corn futures and higher cattle futures has been beneficial to the feeder cattle trade. The feeder supply included 19 percent steers, 28 percent Holsteins, 32 percent heifers, 21 percent bulls, with 35 percent over 600 lbs.

If there is no money in it for them they could and should keep the lots empty forever!!!!!!!!!!! Stocking the lots on the hope that you can make money does not pay many bills :cboy:

I really, and honestly believe. Corn producers should sell their corn. Not try make a buck feeding cattle or anything.
