Where do you put your profits?

Help Support CattleToday:

I have an iron addiction. So after all other expenses I try to save up for pieces of equipment. But reality often takes over and land or other improvements take precedence.
Sorry about you being "anemic". You might try some of these:

Some examples of foods rich in iron are: Cooked chicken liver: has 12. 9 mg of iron per 100g; Roasted pumpkin seeds: have 14. 9 mg of iron per 100g; Spirulina: has 28. 5 mg of iron per 100g; Cocoa powder: has 13. 9 mg of iron per 100g; Beef, chicken and fish: have between 1. 3 and 5. 8 mg of iron per 100g; Cooked oysters: have 4. 9 mg of iron per 100g; Cooked egg yolk: has 2. 9 mg of iron per 100g; Pistachios: has 4 mg of iron per 100g; Raisins: has 1. 8 mg of iron per 100g; Cooked black beans: have 1. 5 mg of iron per 100g.

:sneaky:;)😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

There's nothing like a good piece of yellow iron to curb my addictions. If yellow isn't available blue is 2nd best.

All those other "treatments" don't do anything to curb the addiction. Haha

As I read some of these...... I realize how poor I actually am.

Well at least I have the company of a good a wife and cows that need me!
You're rich beyond measure because i wish I had a "better" half. 😪 I've got a worse "quarter." Some might even say eighth. 😆

I've had plenty money before, and also been dead broke. I'll take the happy median.

What you will notice is people that make good profit on any venture, they're taking advantage of something they have ample amounts of already. They're really good at exploiting their unfair advantage whatever that may be. You will also notice the people with all the purpose and no profits are far happier than the people with all the profits and no purpose. Your happiness can only reach the level of your gratitude.

Most improvements to facilities are ones that improve safety and efficiency. I sell equipment. Most often people wonder why they didn't do the improvement sooner. I hear quality of life and family not yelling at each other as a big benefit as well ;-}

Improvements to the land we've seen pay within 5 years. Usually the first year. Most of ours have been in the regenerative grazing realm.
We also have invested back into the farm. Plan to retire from the engineering world and want facilities in place for ease of work and mostly safety. Wife wants to include meat goats, rabbits and chickens to the farm with more time to spend.

I appreciate it is a farmer/rancher joke that no one ever makes any money.
But if no one is actually making a profit, what's the point of doing it?
Capital appreciation of land, cheap beef in the freezer, no sales tax on some things, firewood, rural lifestyle ect...

You seem to be saying that making a good profit is not possible without cheating somehow. I disagree.

I do agree with the last sentence.

No absolutely not saying you have to cheat. My unfair advantage is I live in coal country and I have access to many great neighbors that let me graze reclaimed coal mines for free or little of nothing. Due to my location and set up I have a great jump start to profitability compared to someone that has to pay a great deal for farm leases. People who love technology and are born around silicon valley have a massive head start to the people that love technology and live in coal country where I live. It's about finding where you have a great advantage and acting on it.

Yes!!!! Back in 1999 I went to a grazing workshop. The key note speaker talked about finding your unfair advantage using it to your advantage. It will come in a number of different forms and it is up to you to figure out what it is.

My unfair advantage is my wife is a vet. Huge part in what we do with feeder calves. I farm full time the cow calf thing makes up very little of my income. What little profit it makes goes back into farm pot. It cost so much now to farm drives me crazy. We been going through expenses and trying to plan for next year the last 2 days. The amount of money that goes out blows my mind. I try to watch everything and keep a handle and run a tight ship. But damn it adds up. Long as you make more than spend all works out.

My wife will let me know if we make a profit. 🙂
I would just like to cash flow the ranch. Given the startup costs we will never get ROI from cattle. The ranch itself will be a big asset as its paid for.
So someone asked then why we do it ??
I love the lifestyle, love the animals, love being outside, love when our customers say it's the best beef they've ever eaten...AND we eat better beef than anyone we know.
The only bad part, we have no children and have no one that would want to step up and run it after we're gone.

Like you i dont need the cattle but like doing it.
Also we have no children and no nephews or nieces that are interested in it. Big sale sometime i guess.
Might do like greybeard and sell out and lay around the pool getting a tan.
