What's the odds?

I don't know that I'm looking for an answer to the post as much as I'm frustrated and venting. I have a small herd of reg, polled herefords I'm trying to build to about 25 cows. Right now I have 8 cows, 2 hiefers, and a bull. Of the 8 cows 1 aborted leaving 7 bred cows, we had our 6th calf last night, he makes 6 bull calves this year, zero hiefers. This is the second season of calves for us... 10 bulls, 1 (28lb) hiefer... what are the odds? Not building the herd very fast, but beef prices are up.

Consider yourself lucky. You can build your herd at cheaper prices later on. Put em in the bank for now.
You will eventuallly end up with a 50% bull - hfrr ratio

I feel your pain. We started out 4 years ago doing the same thing. At the end of the first year, we had bull calves everywhere. La4angus is right. In year 3, the girls kicked the boy's butts. All I can say for you right now you might not want to go to any casinos for a while.

one other option... sell these bull calves and buy heifers back..

I agree with JT. I would sell my steers and buy in heifers. In my market area you can sell three commercial steers and buy five commercial cows/heifers. The ratio should be slightly over one to one for registered stock.

Depending upon what you are trying to do (get more replacement heifers), you may need to replace your bull. Bulls are just like men in that they carry the chromosone that determines the sex of the offspring. Just like men, there are clearly some bulls that throw a greater number of one sex over the other in their offspring.

Trade your steers for calf/cow pairs or three for ones.

thats an easy problem to correct. All you have to do is hope for bull calves. works for me!

Chill Will prices are great this year, just happens that way sometimes. Must have been the water this year I ended up with a passale of bull calfs this year also. If your looking for reasonable priced polled Herefords PM me if your in Texas. I can put you in touch with several good breeders.
