what to breed

Help Support CattleToday:

Depends on a couple of things...

First off, the market you're going to be selling into. No point spending time and money raising something that's discounted ten - fifteen cents back cwt as soon as it enters the sales ring.

Second, your climate and type/abundance of forage. Some cattle breeds tolerate cold/heat better than others, and some breeds require less in the grocery dept to keep them in shape

Three, the amount of time you have and experience. No offense, but some breeds/crosses are definately more high maintenance than others...both on facilities and folks.

Fourth, what do you want to see in your pasture? Some folks just plain old prefer one look over another (I'm still a bit of a sucker for goggle-eyed blonde calves...left over from Dad's pb Sim days).

(Order of importance of points depends on personal perspective.)

Take care and good luck making your choice.
