What size slab for bins

Help Support CattleToday:

I priced a Brock 5 ton at the Coop with auger and they said the slab should be 8x8 maximum and 6 inches thick. They never mentioned a footing.

I've had a 4-1/2 ton bin on a 4" slab for 3 years now with no issues. Never gave it a second thought, but now I'm wondering if it will hold up long term. My grain bins are a foot thick around the outer 18" and 5" in the middle.

Sounds like Crack City, Minnesota.

Maybe. One bin has been there for probably 30 years with no cracks yet, the other one is only a few years old. Pretty much all of the concrete on our farm is 4" with plenty of rebar, so far it has all held up. The only slab that's been replaced was the garage apron in front of my parents house, but that only had wire mesh.

I'm facing the same problem with 15' tall hopper bins that will have 10 tons of grain (if we ever get past the drought). what is your opinion on 6" concrete with 12" center on center rebar, or should it be 8". Cost is a factor, but so is keeping the bin upright and good. MC
